1) Participle phrases and gerunds up front:

Being a prominent issue, air pollution should be tackled urgently.


Having been bullied at school, I find it hard to trust people.

2) Conditionals 2 and 3 with inversions instead of “if”:

Were the government to introduce such a law, there would be much less
poverty in these areas.
Had the social media not become part of our everyday lives, many people
would have lost touch with their classmates and childhood friends.

3) Cleft sentences:

What ecologists object to is building a new airport in this area.


The person who inspired my interest in music was my mother.
It is her fascination for the wonders of nature that helped her become a
famous wildlife photographer.

4) Inversions:

Not only do exhaust fumes destroy the ozone layer, but they also harm our
respiratory system.
Rarely do we see our political leaders riding bikes.
Not until I saw you did I realize you were there.

5) Passives:

It is often forgotten that there are those who cannot look after themselves.
We are supposed to take the responsibilities for the damage we have all
caused to the environment.
Such measures are considered to be fairly effective.
It’s high time we had this problem tackled.

6) The advanced use of “so”:

This is so grave an issue that it should by no means be overlooked.

7) Use of “seem/appear” instead of “be”:

There seem to be many more solutions to this problem.


Deforestation appears to be uncontrolled in most areas.

8) Use of “be about to”, be bound to”, be sure/certain to”, “be likely/unlikely
to”, “be due to”, “be on the point of -ing”, “be to” for future predictions:

The crises is not about to finish yet.


The secondary school of today is sure to change.
We are highly likely to lose more species in the nearest future.
He is to be given an award.

9) Modal verbs for deduction and speculation:

There must be some other way of reducing tax.


It might have been a good idea back then, but the current situation is
different.

10) Adverbs:

Obviously, animals should not be kept in captivity.


What I am particularly worried about is a huge gap between the poor and the
rich in my country.

11) Use of “if only”, “but for”, “I wish”, “had it not been for”:

But for the atmosphere, life on Earth would be impossible.


I wish I had more free time to indulge in leisure activities.
Had it not been for the social unrest, the government would have never
introduced the amendments.

12) Use of “used to” and “would” for past actions:

I used to love chess as a boy, but I’m not keen on them any longer.
I would spend hours playing in the yard with my friends when I was little.

13) Use of “one” and “they” for impersonal structures:

One should never base one’s/their judgment on the reports one can’t trust.

14) Use of “would rather” and “It’s time”:

I’d rather our government paid more attention to social issues.


It’s high time we all did something about it.

15) “ Just because...doesn’t mean that”:

Just because the prices are high does not mean that sales will fall.

16) Imperative verb + “and” + statement:

Break the speed limit and a fine will have to be paid.


Study hard and you won’t wait long to get the results.

17) “there to be/there being”:

The government want there to be more taxes.


Tax rises will cause there to be more poverty.
The need for safety involves there being a supervisor at the scene.

18) Adjective/adverb + “though”:

Difficult though it is to exercise, doing so brings benefits.


Quickly though a gazelle can run, it cannot outpace a cheetah.

19) “Be it/Be they...or…”:

Be it summer or winter, top athletes have to train.


Be they sweet or sour, apple make a delicious dessert.

20) “With” + noun + “-ing/-ed”:

The war was waged by the army, with the air force staying at home.
With the work finished, the labourers started to drift away.

21) “Many a + noun” instead of “many + plural form”:

Many a tourist comes to our area to savour our local cuisine.


Many a student dreams of getting a grant to study abroad.

22) Advanced use of “such” and “so”:

His reputation is such that his competitors are in awe of him.


So disgusted were they by the bad language that they walked out.
Such was our annoyance that we refused to cooperate further.

23) Use of advanced less frequent linking devices:

Seeing that the usual measures have proved ineffective, I suggest trying out a
new approach.
We are expecting a busy summer insofar as bookings are already up for
August.
This product is guaranteed inasmuch as we’ll replace it if you return it within
30 days.
He was very nervous for he was being videoed.
Sales are down. Therefore/Consequently, there’ll be no pay rise this year.
