CAT4 Practice Paper: Part 3
Read the following with your child:
This is a multiple-choice paper in which you have to mark your answer to each
question on the separate answer sheet. You should mark only one answer for
each question.
Draw a firm line clearly through the rectangle next to your answer like this:
If you make a mistake, rub it out as completely as you can and put in your new
answer.
There are three parts in a CAT4 practice paper. This is Part 3. You will see an
explanation of what to do, followed by a worked example and two practice
questions. Solutions to the example and practice questions are provided
Be sure to keep your place in the correct section on the answer sheet. Mark
your answer in the box that has the same number as the question in the
booklet.
You may find some of the questions difficult. If you cannot do a question, do
not waste time on it but go on to the next. If you are not sure of an answer,
choose the one you think is best.
Work as quickly and as carefully as you can.

PART 3
Number Sequences
In these questions, you are given a series of numbers. You must find the
number that continues the series in the most sensible way and mark it on the
answer sheet.
Example 1 4 7 10 [?]
A 11 B 12 C 13 D 15 E 17
Answer 13
Solution In this series, you add 3 each time. For other series, you might have
to perform a different sort of operation (+, -, ×, ÷), or even more
than one operation.
There might also be two series involved: the first comprising the 1st,
3rd, 5th number etc. and the second comprising the 2nd, 4th, 6th
etc.
P1 32 39 46 53 [?]
A 55 B 56 C 57 D 60 E 63
The sequence increases by 7 each time.
P2 12 18 23 27 [?]
A 28 B 30 C 31 D 33 E 35
The sequence increases by 6, then by 5, then by 4, and so on.

Figure recognition
Look at the example question below. The shape on the left can be found in one of
the figures in the answer options. The figure containing the shape and its letter has
been marked on your answer sheet.
Example
A B C D E
Answer: B
The shape on the left can be found within the second figure.
Now do the two practice questions.
P1
A B C D E
The figure on the left is a right-angled triangle, which is shorter than it is wide.
It appears in one of the answer options on the right.

Figure analysis
Look at the example question below. In the top row, the square sheet of paper is folded
a few times, and then a shape is punched through it. One of the five figures on the
bottom row shows how the square looks once it has been unfolded. Its letter has been
marked on your answer sheet.
Example
A B C D E
Answer: A
In the example above, the square has first been folded in half horizontally and then the
bottom left corner has been folded diagonally. A single diamond has been punched
through; this rules out B and C.
When we unfold the diagonal fold, we will see a second diamond. The two diamonds
will be reflections of each other; this rules out E.
When we unfold the horizontal fold, the top half of the square will be the mirror image
of the bottom half of the square; this rules out D. Therefore, A is the correct answer.
Now do the two practice questions.
Page 12 Please go on to the next page >>> © Atom Learning 2024 atomlearning.com
P1
A B C D E
The square above has been folded once in half horizontally. Two triangles with different
orientations have been punched through.
P2
A B C D E
The square above has been folded once in half vertically and then the bottom half has
been folded again horizontally upwards. One star has been punched through.

CAT4 Part 3
Parents’ Guide
About this test
This is a multiple-choice paper designed to familiarise your child with the types of questions
they will see in a CAT4 test.
There are 168 questions in the full test. This practice paper is Part 3 and has 63 questions
which gradually increase in difficulty. It covers number sequences, figure recognition and figure
analysis.
What you’ll need
Printed question booklet and answer shee
Penci
Rubbe
Scrap pape
Timer
How to prepare
Your child should take the test at a time when they feel alert. Choose a quiet area where they
can work comfortably without distractions.
Talk with your child about the reasons for taking the practice test. Explain that the structure of
the paper is similar to the one they will see in the real CAT4. The questions will help them know
what to expect on exam day.
Explain that they might find some of the questions difficult. They should work as quickly and
carefully as possible.
If they get stuck on a question, they should move on to the next one. If they have time left over
at the end, they can go back to any skipped questions. If they have more time left over, they
should check their answers.

CAT4 Part 3
Parents’ Guide
Taking the test
Dictionaries are not allowed. Give your child a scrap sheet of paper and encourage them to use
it for any rough working out.
Your child should mark their answers on the Answer Sheet, not in the test booklet.
On the Answer Sheet, your child should record their answers by drawing a clear line through
the answer box with a pencil. Mistakes should be rubbed out and not crossed out.
Timing
It’s helpful for children to get comfortable with taking tests under timed conditions. This paper
is Part 3 and has a time limit of 26 minutes. Your child should spend 8 minutes on Number
Sequences, 9 minutes on Figure Recognition and 9 minutes on Figure Analysis. Only start
timing when they have finished reading the instructions.
If they haven’t finished the test after 26 minutes, circle the question they got to, then let them
carry on. When you mark the test you’ll be able to see how many questions they got right in 26
minutes and how many overall. This will show you whether your child needs to work on their
speed, accuracy, or both.
Marking
You can find the answers on the Answer Key. Give your child one mark for each correct answer
(no half-marks are available in the real test!). Do not take marks off for wrong answers.
Take time to discuss your child’s results in a positive and encouraging way. Work through the
corrections, what they would do differently next time, and pick out key areas to revise next.
