Email Marketing Crash Course
Grow the list every chance you get
Your email list is important because it’s yours. The same for your customer. It’s not just a
database of people who have given their permission to be messaged. It’s an asset that
nobody can take away from you.
This is why you want to have a great lead magnet for your business, and for your clients.
So you can collect emails. Here’s a worksheet and checklist by DM:

Worksheet.pdf and if you need ideas go here: https://www.digitalmarketer.com/lead-

Some key ways to grow a list:
• Use landing pages that are designed for list building (i.e. clickfunnels, leadpages,
unbounce, etc).
• Install opt in lightboxes on your websites/blog if you or your clients are using
wordpress - https://optinmonster.com/features/lightbox-popups/
• Link to your landing pages from your Facebook posts, your tweets, your LinkedIn
posts, your YouTube videos, etc.
• Run contests and giveaways on social media and to “enter to win,” they must enter
with their email. Then, let them know that you’ll announce the winner via email to
assure they give you their correct email and also this will make your open rate sky
rocket.

Keep your landing pages simple, and capture emails
It’s not about being fancy. It’s not even really about you unless you’re a celebrity. It’s
about making an irresistible offer that motivates someone to give you their email in
exchange for giving them valuable information.
Golden rule of email marketing
Send valuable emails you’d want to see in YOUR inbox.
It can come in the form of ENTERTAINMENT or it can come in the form of EDUCATION.
What you need to remember is that people signed up to your list because they WANT
what you have to offer. So, as long as you follow this rule, you don't have to worry about
sending “too many” emails or “offending” your subscribers. Instead, you can focus on
writing entertaining and insightful emails.

Find your voice (or your customers voice)
Never talk as the business, talk as a person talking to a person. Ideally, every email you
send and send on behalf of your clients, are sent from a PERSON. People don’t want to be
talked AT, they want to be talked to by a person.
How to get your emails to convert
Think about this – your mother has 100% email open rate. If she sends YOU an email,
there is a 100% chance you are opening it. So, it’s rarely the deliverability.
Emails that convert are emails that connect with the person you are sending it to.
CONVERT are emails that CONNECT. How do you connect? With stories.
Tell stories. People love to read stories, they can relate to stories and stories can lead
them down a thought path you want them to go down.
Be you and talk to them one-on-one. Not one to many. Always write as if you’re talking to
one person.
Your email “From line” should
• Contain a person’s name and not only a company or brand name Contain company
name your prospect knows
• Come from a person whose title will be perceived as important or high-value
• Not be overly formal, like “Mr. John Smith”
• Not resemble anything you might find in your spam folder right now (go check!)

Subject Line Formulas
Your email subject line should:
• Give the subscriber just enough info to open the email
• Ideally reflect the content within your email
• Read like a friend’s subject line would for formatting and punctuation
• Not use Title Case Like This (who writes like that?)
• Not include your prospect’s full name (it’s okay to test first names)
• Not include any obvious spelling mistakes
Here are some formulas that can help you stand out:
Open Loop Formula
Give people just enough to make them want to open.

Here are some tips that Vertical Response says may not set off official spam filters, but
www.getwsodo.com
they tend to set off human spam filters:
• Don’t write subject lines ALL IN CAPS.
• Don’t make spelling mistakes.
• Don’t plea with people to “Open Me!”
• Don’t deceive readers with a false promise.
• Don’t give away everything in your subject line.
• Don’t use one word – like “Hi!” – as your subject line.
• Nix the punctuation!!!
• Don’t add Re: to your subject line to deceive readers.
In regard to emoji’s, Experian says that 56% of brands using emoji’s in subject lines have
higher open rates. However, don’t use too many of them in a subject line, which could
trip spam filters and human filters.
Mailchimp identified three words that won’t trip the spam filter, but still get low open
rates due to being deemed spammy by readers: Help, Percent Off, and Reminder.
Email Automation
Software: Mailchimp, Infusionsoft, Active Campaign – there are a lot of options. Keep in
mind, it’s more about the strategies then the tools. Every tool can work and will work for
the right strategy. To learn more about email automation campaigns, I recommend
