Glossary of Terms for Beginners:
All my patterns are for beginners, so any terms that may not be obvious are explained ☺
Binding: a way of finishing a seam or hem of a garment by stitching on an edging or trim.
Casing: a fabric tunnel through which elastic or a drawstring can be threaded to pull in or
draw up the fabric.
Edgestitch: a row of continuous stitches on top or right side of garment very close to the
edge.
Grainline: the direction that the threads are strongest, with the least amount of stretch. This is
always going to be parallel to the selvage.
Hem: the edge of a piece of cloth or clothing that has been turned under and sewn.
Inseam: the seam in a pair of pants from the crotch to the bottom of the leg.
Seam: a line along which two pieces of fabric are sewn together.
Selvage: the woven, non-frayable edge created by the manufacturer, usually stiffer with holes.
Topstitch: to make a row of continuous stitches on the top or right side of a garment.
Laying out your pattern:
• Print the patterns at 100%. DO NOT SCALE OR FIT TO PAGE.
• Note: for sizes Premie you don’t need to print pages 21-28; for sizes NB to 18-24M you
don’t need to print pages 25-28.
• Measure the 1x1 inch square to make sure it printed correctly.
• Following the border on each page, cut the extra paper off:
• Tape your pattern pieces
together by lining up the
corners of the tiles to make
stars. The pages should NOT
overlap.
• The pattern should look like this
• Cut out each piece along the indicated dashes
for the size that you are making.
Cutting out your fabric:
Arrange all your pattern pieces so the
grainline (the direction with the least
stretch, parallel to selvage) is running
vertical through the garment.
Centerfold: Fold fabric upon itself and align
the side of the pattern piece that says
“centerfold” to the folded edge. Cut out
fabric piece, leaving the folded edge intact.
Notches: Cut out notches where indicated
on pattern. These are used to line up the
the pieces correctly.
Cut 2 opposite: For the back and pocket
pieces, cut one piece with the pattern piece
facing up and the other with the pattern
piece facing down, giving you a total of
two mirrored pieces. Otherwise you can
fold the fabric on itself and cut through
both layers, thereby cutting both pieces at
once. Do this twice for the pockets, giving
Tip: The pockets can be from the same fabric as you a total of 4 pocket pieces.

Ready, Set, Sew!!
*All seams are ¼” unless stated otherwise* wrong side
1) Put the back pieces on top of eachother, right sides together.
Serge or sew down center seam, making one piece.
2) Fold raw edge of neck on the front piece over ¼” then again over
½”. Pin in place and press. Using a straight stitch, sew a few
mms away from folded edge on the wrong side of garment,
ensuring you are going through both layers of fabric. This will be
the casing for the elastic in the neck.
Tip: Folding the raw edge over twice hides the raw edge, which is
important with woven fabric so it won’t fray, but gives a more
finished, professional look , even if you are using knit fabric ☺
3) Using a safety pin, thread the elastic for the neck through the casing. Pull the end of the
elastic through so it is inside the casing but at the very edge of opening. Anchor this end
of the elastic by sewing across elastic and casing 1/8” from the opening. Continue to pull
the other end through, gathering the neckline until the other end comes through. Anchor
this end the same way, with the elastic inside the casing, but at the very edge of opening.

notch
5) Serge or sew the binding strip to the front piece, along the
arm seam, right sides together, making sure to line up the
notches at the top. Repeat for the other side of front piece.
Tip: If you do not have a serger, go with a zigzag or stretch stitch that
goes to the edge of the seam—these have more give and won’t break as
easily when stretched and will prevent fraying in woven fabric.
6) Serge or sew the same binding strips
sewn to the front piece to the back
piece, right sides together, again
making sure the notches line up. This
ensures that the shoulder straps will
be the same length.
Rift: If you want tie-on straps, don’t sew the front
binding strips to the back piece, sew separate
binding strips to the back.
7) Fold the binding strips over lengthwise so
the raw edges meet in the middle, and
press in place. Fold them over one more
time, overlapping the garment and
enclosing all of the raw edges.
8) Edgestitch the binding in place, a couple mms
away from the edge.
Tip: Any time you edgestitch or topstitch,
make sure you are sewing along the right side
of the garment, so you can monitor your stitch
and ensure it is where it needs to be.
9) Sew the 2 front pocket pieces to front piece, right
sides together along the side seam line on both
sides, making sure to align the notches. Repeat
with the back piece.

10) Lay back piece on top of front piece, right
sides together, and pockets flipped out.
Serge or sew down side seam, take a
detour around the pockets, and continue
down side seam. Repeat with other side
seam.
11) Serge or sew inseam together.
12) Fold hem over ¼” then again over ½”. Pin in place and press.
Using a straight stitch,
sew a few mms away
from folded edge on the
wrong side of garment,
ensuring you are going
through both layers of
fabric, leaving a 1 cm
opening.
13) Using a safety pin, thread elastic through casing, and pull both sides through the opening.
Overlap the ends of the elastic and stitch together, making sure there are no twists in the
elastic.
14) Place the elastic into the casing and finish the hem closed.
