DIALux evo Advanced course - Exercises

Module 1.1
Introduction to Building Planning

We will create a lighting design for an office building. The architect has sent you the DWG file for the
ground floor.

Start DIALux evo and import the following DWG file:

Desktop Participant evo/DWG/office_ground floor.dwg

Tip: Switch off the layer "ground floor_storey-facade" for the construction, in order to see the outer
and inner contours better. This makes the construction very simple.

Layer in DWG

Insert a new building using an external contour and define rooms 1 to 4 using the internal contour.

Tip: Room names

Utilisation profile: you can keep the standard-utilisation profile „office“ in all office spaces. Only the
staircase should be adjusted to the corresponding utilization.

Keep the maintenance factor at 0.8 in all spaces.

Architectural details should always be considered in the project. Therefore,

please insert the windows and columns into the already constructed rooms.

Module 1.2
From spatial planning to the entire building
We start out again with the office building.
In this case, however, the project is based on the construction of individual rooms and is to be
extended to the entire floor for technical lighting verification.

Single room construction in DIALux evo

Please open the following DIALux evo file:

Desktop Participant evo/1_Construction/1_2_office building_rooms.evo

There are different solutions to carry out the construction for all rooms on the ground floor. At this
point, become familiar with the procedure in DIALux evo and pay attention to the differences:

Solution A: Add the missing rooms using the "Draw new room" function.

3
DIALux evo Advanced course - Exercises

Solution B: Delete the existing outer contour in order to be able to "draw a new outer contour".

You can then define the missing rooms using "Draw new inner contour".

3D-View of the floor with new outer contour.

4
DIALux evo Advanced course - Exercises

Note: If a "new inner contour" is drawn without an outer contour existing around the room, DIALux
evo creates only one line, i.e. no wall! See illustration!

Active inner contour, the outer contour is still missing

With the "Generate outer contours" function DIALux evo automatically sets an outer contour in
relation to the inner contour and as a result creates the wall surfaces.

5
DIALux evo Advanced course - Exercises

In „Office 1“and the adjacent „Office Reserve„ there is still a plasterboard ceiling. The room height
here is only 2.85 m.

Please add a suspended ceiling to both rooms.

Module 2
Furniture and Objects
A meaningful lighting design requires that all information about the interior design is included in the
project. The next step is therefore to work out the entire ground floor in more detail.

Please open the file, to do this module:

Additional task: construction of display cases

Build various display cases for the exhibition of art objects. This example shows a display case with
pedestal for a sculpture.

Module 3.1
Interior lighting - planar illumination (direct lighting)
In the offices, lighting should be planned in such a way that it can function as workplace lighting. The
minimum requirement of 500 lux as the maintenance value of the horizontal mean illuminance (Eh,m )
can refer to the whole room or in particular only to the workplaces.

First, import luminaires with a beam characteristic for wide-area lighting (planar illumination). You can
use a plug-in, online or the Lumsearch search engine to find the according luminaire.

Additional task: Energy assessment

The ground floor has a glass façade. This means an estimated savings potential for this floor of
1537 kWh/a. By using sensors in the offices, the savings potential can be doubled.

In the display options, the display for the savings potential can be activated.

accentuate the murals or architectural elements such as the columns to make the interior more
attractive.

Module 4
Targeted use of calculation objects

Calculate your project and take a closer look at your lighting planning using all the results. You have
several possibilities to get an overview.

1. First use the global false colors display.

The false color display can be either soft or graduated. You can modify the individual numbers with a
right click. The numbers between two modifications are then automatically interpolated.

Soft display of global false colors

2. You can also select individual surfaces and assign isolines, value charts or a false color display to
them. This applies to the working planes and calculation surfaces, but also to all surfaces, such as
those of a table, a wall or a floor.

Tip:
In the detail selection below you can make adjustments for the isolines and value charts. For example,
you can change the font size or add values that are also to be displayed as isolines.

3. Use the results monitor to evaluate the individual results. With the help of the eye symbol you can
identify and select individual areas.

The mixed use zone is a central area which is also accessible for visitors. Particularly where the main
traffic flow takes place, working planes should be set up for the evaluation of the required lighting
levels.

The EN 12464 - 1 recommends a maintenance value for average horizontal illuminance ( Em,h ) of 100
lux with a uniformity ( Uo ) of 0.4 for corridors and staircases.

With stairs, orientation and the avoidance of danger areas also play an important role. The visibility of
the individual steps is essential.

Please insert a calculation surface on the stairs. The technical lighting evaluation follows when the
upper floor has been inserted for construction and further lighting added.

Tip:
The information about the rotation angle 34° can easily be found with the help line.

Advanced exercises based on own focus

5.1 Optimization: Modification / replacement of existing

luminaires

5.2 Staircase: Construction and lighting

5.3 Ceiling cove: Construction and lighting

27
DIALux evo Advanced course - Exercises

5.1 Optimization

Please open this file:

Desktop Participant evo/5_additional/5_1_classroom_luminaires.evo

The lighting in the classroom and in the archive is not satisfactory and should be revised.

The room height is 3.00 m.

Predominantly pendant luminaires, with mounting height of 2.50 m.

Please check the lighting with regard to the requirements of the visual task, but also with regard to
efficiency.

1. Classroom

Here in the classroom the lighting for the whiteboard in particular should be optimized.

Also verify the uniformity of the working plane. What results would you have in the room without
the furnishings? Are the requirements then fulfilled or must something be optimized?

Classroom

28
DIALux evo Advanced course - Exercises

2. Library / archive: shelves with books and media

Vertical illumination is particularly important here. It is imperative that the shelves are uniformly
illuminated so that the book titles in the bottom row can be read clearly.

The lighting in the archive is oversized. Find a solution to save energy. Pay attention to the
uniformity of the vertical illuminance!

5.2 Staircase
The staircase in the office building has to be planned in detail.

Continue working with your project "Office building" or open this file:
Desktop Participant evo/5_additional/5_2_office building.evo

In this project there is no section of the staircase. Help yourself with a guide line grid to create the
staircase quickly and easily.

Details of the staircase:

Steps = 9 (the 10. step is the intermediate landing)

Step = 0,27 m
Riser = 0,18 m

After you have constructed and positioned the grid, draw the contour as an extrusion body.

You can then rotate and position the staircase to fit the desired location.

Tip:
You can best rotate the stairs in the 3D view. Do not forget to position the lower edge of the stairs at
the level of the floor.

First insert the suspended ceiling in office 2. The new room height is to be set to 2.85 m. Then you
can configure the ceiling cove.

Tip:
Think about the distance to the wall
and enter the offset correctly, so that
you have space for the luminaires.

Settings of the ceiling parameters

Then look for a suitable luminaire that you can position on the ceiling offset.

luminaire positions. Configure the export for the ground floor and save
everything as a DWG file on your computer.
