DIALux evo: Office Lighting Design
DIALux evo: Office Lighting Design
Module 1.1
Introduction to Building Planning
We will create a lighting design for an office building. The architect has sent you the DWG file for the
ground floor.
Tip: Switch off the layer "ground floor_storey-facade" for the construction, in order to see the outer
and inner contours better. This makes the construction very simple.
Layer in DWG
Insert a new building using an external contour and define rooms 1 to 4 using the internal contour.

Utilisation profile: you can keep the standard-utilisation profile „office“ in all office spaces. Only the
staircase should be adjusted to the corresponding utilization.
Window: Tip:
Height = 2.80 m To avoid "holes" in the walls, you can
Frame width = 0.02 m work with the fixed cutting depth.
Window sill height = 0.02 m

Module 1.2
From spatial planning to the entire building
We start out again with the office building.
In this case, however, the project is based on the construction of individual rooms and is to be
extended to the entire floor for technical lighting verification.
There are different solutions to carry out the construction for all rooms on the ground floor. At this
point, become familiar with the procedure in DIALux evo and pay attention to the differences:
Solution A: Add the missing rooms using the "Draw new room" function.
3
DIALux evo Advanced course - Exercises
Solution B: Delete the existing outer contour in order to be able to "draw a new outer contour".
You can then define the missing rooms using "Draw new inner contour".
4
DIALux evo Advanced course - Exercises
Note: If a "new inner contour" is drawn without an outer contour existing around the room, DIALux
evo creates only one line, i.e. no wall! See illustration!
With the "Generate outer contours" function DIALux evo automatically sets an outer contour in
relation to the inner contour and as a result creates the wall surfaces.
5

In „Office 1“and the adjacent „Office Reserve„ there is still a plasterboard ceiling. The room height
here is only 2.85 m.

Module 2
Furniture and Objects
A meaningful lighting design requires that all information about the interior design is included in the
project. The next step is therefore to work out the entire ground floor in more detail.
7

Tip:
With the "Boolean operation - Combine" you can save the individual steps as one staircase. This
results in a new object with its own origin, which is very important for the positions in x-, y- and z-
direction!
Build various display cases for the exhibition of art objects. This example shows a display case with
pedestal for a sculpture.
The display case has a total height of 1.55 m and is composed of various elements. Use the simple
cube and change the dimensions and materials of each element.

Module 3.1
Interior lighting - planar illumination (direct lighting)
In the offices, lighting should be planned in such a way that it can function as workplace lighting. The
minimum requirement of 500 lux as the maintenance value of the horizontal mean illuminance (Eh,m )
can refer to the whole room or in particular only to the workplaces.
First, import luminaires with a beam characteristic for wide-area lighting (planar illumination). You can
use a plug-in, online or the Lumsearch search engine to find the according luminaire.

The ground floor has a glass façade. This means an estimated savings potential for this floor of
1537 kWh/a. By using sensors in the offices, the savings potential can be doubled.
In the display options, the display for the savings potential can be activated.

Interior lighting - Accent illumination
With accents, especially on the vertical surfaces, you can set focal points for perception. For example,
accentuate the murals or architectural elements such as the columns to make the interior more
attractive.

Tip:
Pay particular attention to whether the
luminaires have "joints". The joints allow
you to rotate the luminaire head. The
installation housing remains fixed in place.
Module 4
Targeted use of calculation objects
Calculate your project and take a closer look at your lighting planning using all the results. You have
several possibilities to get an overview.
2. You can also select individual surfaces and assign isolines, value charts or a false color display to
them. This applies to the working planes and calculation surfaces, but also to all surfaces, such as
those of a table, a wall or a floor.
24
DIALux evo Advanced course - Exercises
Tip:
In the detail selection below you can make adjustments for the isolines and value charts. For example,
you can change the font size or add values that are also to be displayed as isolines.

3. Use the results monitor to evaluate the individual results. With the help of the eye symbol you can
identify and select individual areas.

The mixed use zone is a central area which is also accessible for visitors. Particularly where the main
traffic flow takes place, working planes should be set up for the evaluation of the required lighting
levels.
The EN 12464 - 1 recommends a maintenance value for average horizontal illuminance ( Em,h ) of 100
lux with a uniformity ( Uo ) of 0.4 for corridors and staircases.
With stairs, orientation and the avoidance of danger areas also play an important role. The visibility of
the individual steps is essential.
Please insert a calculation surface on the stairs. The technical lighting evaluation follows when the
upper floor has been inserted for construction and further lighting added.

Tip:
The information about the rotation angle 34° can easily be found with the help line.
Please pay attention to the calculation parameter "horizontal", as well as to manually set the
individual measuring points so that they are on each step.

Please select one of the following tasks for independent review and study.
27
DIALux evo Advanced course - Exercises
5.1 Optimization
The lighting in the classroom and in the archive is not satisfactory and should be revised.
Please check the lighting with regard to the requirements of the visual task, but also with regard to
efficiency.
1. Classroom
Here in the classroom the lighting for the whiteboard in particular should be optimized.
Also verify the uniformity of the working plane. What results would you have in the room without
the furnishings? Are the requirements then fulfilled or must something be optimized?
Classroom
28
DIALux evo Advanced course - Exercises
Vertical illumination is particularly important here. It is imperative that the shelves are uniformly
illuminated so that the book titles in the bottom row can be read clearly.
The lighting in the archive is oversized. Find a solution to save energy. Pay attention to the
uniformity of the vertical illuminance!

5.2 Staircase
The staircase in the office building has to be planned in detail.
Continue working with your project "Office building" or open this file:
Desktop Participant evo/5_additional/5_2_office building.evo
In this project there is no section of the staircase. Help yourself with a guide line grid to create the
staircase quickly and easily.
Step = 0,27 m
Riser = 0,18 m
After you have constructed and positioned the grid, draw the contour as an extrusion body.
30
DIALux evo Advanced course - Exercises
You can then rotate and position the staircase to fit the desired location.
Tip:
You can best rotate the stairs in the 3D view. Do not forget to position the lower edge of the stairs at
the level of the floor.
Finally, enter the correct width of the staircase or use the "scale" function to adjust the width.

First insert the suspended ceiling in office 2. The new room height is to be set to 2.85 m. Then you
can configure the ceiling cove.
Tip:
Think about the distance to the wall
and enter the offset correctly, so that
you have space for the luminaires.
Then look for a suitable luminaire that you can position on the ceiling offset.

Whole building - Storey construction
Continue working with your project "Office building" or please open the following project: Desktop
Participant evo/7_storeys/7_office building_01_ground floor.evo
Now we would like to complete the 1st upper floor of the building.
Please load the following DWG - file into the project and move the floor plan to the right position:
Desktop Participant evo/DWG/office_1st floor.dwg
As you can see the plans of the ground floor and the 1st floor are almost identical. Different are only a
part of the interior design and the staircase, which is leading to the 2nd floor.
Therefore, please copy the entire ground floor and then make the necessary adjustments. This
applies in particular to room names and furniture.

DIALux evo Advanced course - Exercises
Please do not forget the construction of the ceiling cut-outs in the area of the
mixed use zone and the staircase.
Tip:
Move the newly imported dwg plan also in height so that it lies on the floor. This allows you to use
the drawing perfectly in the 3D view as well.
37
DIALux evo Advanced course - Exercises
The floor plan of the 2nd floor differs greatly from the other floors. It is therefore advisable to
reconstruct the second floor here.
Create a new empty storey (height 4.00 m) to continue with floor planning. Start with the building
contour and then use the inner contours.

Module 7.3
Whole building - Space over several storeys
The staircase connects all three floors and is to be designed as a "separate space" from the ground
floor to the 2nd floor.
Go to the ground floor and lay out the new space there.
Name the new space "Stairs 1-3".
In the section Luminaires - Maintenance Factors you can find the luminaires from
each floor in this space and assign them to the entire space "staircase 1-3".
41
DIALux evo Advanced course - Exercises
Please create a calculation surface on the 1st floor on the stairs. You can assign this
calculation area also to the new space "staircase 1-3".
Tip:
In the documentation the new "space" can be shown with all details.

Module 8.2
Light scenes with daylight
In the first step, please change the location and therefore also the alignment
of the building.
Location: Berlin
Tip:
„Lüdenscheid“ is the default location, but longitude and latitude are not specified. You can enter
these values manually if none of the offered locations in the list is suitable.
The north arrow does not have to be changed, since the plan and thus the building are aligned so
that north is at the top.
46
DIALux evo Advanced course - Exercises
Tip:
The more light scenes / luminaire groups, the longer the calculation time. When calculating with
daylight, it is recommended to map artificial lighting in only one group.
The first light scene should remain untouched and contain all luminaires.
The second light scene with daylight could be a sunny summer day. Copy the first light scene again
and then add the daylight parameters.
Options daylight
Module 9
