Emotional Intelligence

Prof. Burkland
September 3, 2024
AGENDA:

• Create a list of leadership characteristics

• Explore emotional intelligence as a foundation for leadership and teamwork
effectiveness
• Develop an understanding of the four components of emotional intelligence
• Exercise empathy and build our understanding of others
Let’s take action and
explore…
LEADERS: GREAT VS. LOUSY
EXERCISE: THE GREAT LEADER

Think of someone you know personally, or observed closely, that

you believe was/is an OUTSTANDING LEADER.

Write down a few words/phrases/characteristics that come to

mind when you think what made them such a GREAT LEADER.

We will share these characteristics with the class.

EXERCISE: THE LOUSY LEADER

Now think of someone you know personally, or observed closely,

that you believe was/is a TERRIBLE LEADER.

Write down a few words/phrases/characteristics that come to

mind when you think what made them such a LOUSY LEADER.

We will share these with the class.

TAKE AWAY FROM THE EXERCISE….

1. Most of the characteristics listed have nothing to do with cognitive or technical

expertise!!! That is not because they are unimportant but because they typically
do not predict outstanding leadership.
2. Your descriptions are relational in nature. One of the keys to great leadership is
nurturing relationship and paying attention to your relationship with others.
3. Your descriptions are emotion based. There are strong feelings when you
recalled your great vs. lousy leaders. Great leaders understand the importance
of emotions—both managing their own and managing others’.
RESONANT LEADERSHIP: TWO DIMENSIONS

When someone achieves “great” leadership, often they are

RESONANT leaders where they:
1. pay attention to the emotional tone of their team by engaging
others and,
2. build connections to those they lead (synchrony)

When you have negative emotional tone and low synchrony you are a
DISSONANT leader
RESONANT LEADERSHIP: TWO DIMENSIONS
