Pre-Production
Concept and Ideas
This project aims to craft a title sequence for a fantasy-scary movie, taking inspiration
from well-known titles like "Edward Scissorhands" (1990) and "Goosebumps" (2015). These
films feature title sequences that effectively blend elements of fantasy and suspense, setting
the stage for the story to unfold.
The motion graphics planned for this project will adopt a vintage style
reminiscent of film strips and blur filters, while also incorporating modern 2D animation
techniques. By blending vintage aesthetics with contemporary graphics, the project seeks to
create a visually captivating and thematically cohesive title sequence.

Researching
After establishing the project's central theme and concept, conducting research
becomes integral, particularly as the project aims to integrate two contrasting styles of
motion graphics.
Font
Among the elements under scrutiny is the font featured in the movie "Edward
Scissorhands," known as Mistral and designed by Roger Excoffon in 1953.

The font chosen for this project is Unfinished Scream. It shares similar characteristics
with the Mistral font but features a more modern style. Additionally, Unfinished Scream is
easily downloadable from Dafont.com, making it a convenient choice for the project.

Graphic Design and Motion Graphic

Given the project's pursuit of a vintage style, opting for a film strip motif is deemed
the most appropriate choice. To seamlessly integrate this motion graphic, it is advisable to
explore preset options that complement the project's theme on platforms like
MotionArray.com.

The motion graphics, editing techniques, and tonal aspects employed in this project
draw inspiration from the film "Fear Street." Notably, the movie's opening scene adeptly
blends vintage and modern editing styles, skillfully integrating footage, graphics, fonts, and
colours to create a seamless visual narrative.

Colour
This project aims to employ colours that evoke a sense of fantasy while also imbuing
an element of eeriness, making the traditional Halloween palette particularly well-suited.
The colours commonly associated with Halloween are as follows:
The first colour, orange, signifies warmth, enthusiasm, and the autumn harvest. It is
reminiscent of falling leaves and illuminated pumpkins, conjuring feelings of energy,
creativity, and anticipation, while also hinting at the mystical and supernatural elements
often associated with Halloween.
Black, the second colour, embodies darkness and mystery, evoking images of the
night, shadows, and the unknown. It adds an air of sophistication and foreboding to
Halloween themes, symbolizing the eerie and macabre aspects of the holiday.
Purple, the third colour, carries regal and mystical connotations, adding depth and
allure to Halloween aesthetics. It symbolizes magic, creativity, and spirituality, suggesting the
existence of enchanting spells, majestic witches, and mysterious realms beyond the ordinary.
Finally, green, the fourth colour, represents nature, growth, and renewal. It offers a
refreshing contrast to the darkness of Halloween, symbolizing life, vitality, and rejuvenation,
while also alluding to the presence of supernatural beings and mysterious landscapes.

Equipment
For the title sequence of this project, the incorporation of real footage is essential to
convey the storytelling element effectively. To achieve this, a Handycam will be employed
due to its capability to create a distinctive style of zooming into objects. Furthermore, the
low resolution of the files captured by the handycam aligns perfectly with the thematic
elements of the project.

Location
To infuse the title sequence with an eerie atmosphere, the ideal location for filming is
the Welford cemetery, known for its old buildings that contribute to a haunting ambience.
The unique zooming style facilitated by the handycam enhances the overall effect,
intensifying the sense of dread and imparting the desired scary vibes to the sequence.

Production
Shooting and Filming
Once the filming location is determined, the next step involves capturing footage in a
setting that exudes a sinister atmosphere. This entails zooming in and emphasizing eerie
focal points. Creatures like crows are particularly effective at evoking fear and can enhance
the overall ambience, especially in a cemetery setting. Consequently, the majority of shots
will centre on the location itself, the atmospheric conditions, and the inclusion of such
creatures to evoke the quintessential elements of a scary movie.

Two primary issues arose during the shooting phase. Firstly, the intense natural
sunlight posed challenges despite identifying suitable shooting locations. To mitigate this,
adjustments to the camera angle were made to minimize the impact of harsh sunlight on the
footage. Secondly, the low quality of the handycam hindered filming in darker settings. To
address this, modifications were made to the camera's ISO settings, enabling improved
visibility in low-light conditions. These adjustments facilitated the continuation of filming
while overcoming the encountered challenges.
In general, the shooting phase progressed smoothly. Since the footage needed for
the project is brief compared to its overall scope, it was relatively easy to find alternative
locations with similar vibes if needed. This flexibility allowed us to navigate any challenges
encountered during filming and ensured that the project remained on schedule.

Post-Production
Editing
To begin, the footage must encapsulate the essence of the aged film. One effective
method is to utilize the "VHS Effect" preset available on Motionarray.com, which can be
accessed and manipulated using Adobe After Effects. This platform enables comprehensive
editing of all layers within the preset, as it is formatted as a .aep file.

(Before)
Once the preset is applied, various effects can be selected to align with the project's
style. Upon completing the desired effects within the project, it can be exported as a .mp4
file for utilization in subsequent steps.
11

(After)

Following the application of the VHS filter to the video, the subsequent step involves
integrating it into the filmstrip preset. This entails adjusting the text elements, including font
selection, colour, and scaling, to ensure coherence and alignment with the project's
aesthetic

(Final process)
The next motion graphic, titled "Night of Horror," is sourced from Motionarray.com.
This straightforward preset simplifies usage by allowing the placement of images without
extensive adjustments. In this instance, the preset is applied to the actor's presentation.
However, certain filters within the preset may not harmonize with the rest of the video. To
13

address this issue, those filters were hidden, resulting in a seamless integration of the preset
with the overall project.

(Actor Presenting)
The "Funny Halloween Party" preset is ideal for the background worker scene,
effectively bridging the transition from real footage to 2D animation. While the preset's
motion graphics align with the scene's requirements, there are colour inconsistencies that
detract from the main theme. To address this, integrating Halloween colours like orange,
purple, green, and black would enhance the coherence of the Fantasy-Horror movie.
Fortunately, the preset's fonts complement the existing ones, maintaining a unique and
engaging style without becoming monotonous throughout the video.

14

The final scene of the project features an executive producer credit and the movie
title. To achieve this, the "Fun Halloween Title" preset, designed specifically for text scenes,
is employed. This preset
proves convenient within
Adobe After Effects, offering
options to manipulate text
elements such as vertical
and horizontal scaling, as
well as colour adjustments.
These features enable
customization of the text to
ensure it aligns seamlessly
with the project's overall
style and theme.

In the final stage, a notable issue arises during the compilation of all the videos:
noticeable gaps between scenes that fail to blend seamlessly. To address this, duplicating
certain videos and inserting them before the next scene aids in maintaining continuity. For
scenes lacking duplicable content, incorporating solids as transition objects proves effective.
These solids can animate into the frame from the top or left, facilitating smooth transitions
between videos with distinct styles.

Premier Pro
Once all the motion graphics are exported from Adobe After Effects, the next phase
involves combining, editing, and adding music to the project. The initial step is to
incorporate the music, facilitating easier synchronization of the videos. Selecting portions of
the song that complement the footage is crucial for seamless integration. Editing the video
ensures smooth transitions and alignment with the music. Some footage may have
prolonged segments that disrupt the flow, addressed by utilizing the razor tool to separate
and remove unnecessary sections. The objective is to ensure that the video and music
complement each other harmoniously, enhancing the overall viewing experience. Then
export it to H.264, 25 fps and .mp4 file
16

Conclusion
In summary, the production journey of this project has been characterized by
meticulous planning, innovative problem-solving, and a commitment to thematic coherence.
From conceptualization to execution, each stage demanded attention to detail and
adaptability. Despite encountering challenges such as lighting issues and equipment
constraints, strategic adjustments and creative solutions ensured the project's progression.
The integration of diverse presets and techniques, sourced from platforms like
MotionArray.com and Adobe After Effects, facilitated the realization of a compelling
narrative infused with vintage charm and modern flair. Through collaborative efforts and
dedication to excellence, the project achieved its goal of crafting a visually stunning and
thematically rich title sequence.
By incorporating Halloween-themed colours, seamless transitions, and synchronized
