ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The eight-week internship at the Library of AGU, while not an extensive

period, provided me with ample opportunity to systematize and apply the
knowledge I have accumulated over the past four years to practical tasks. This
experience enabled me to gain deeper insight into my major and effectively apply
the knowledge. What's more, after the internship, I have gained a great deal of
practical knowledge and skills to prepare for future pursuits.

First and foremost, I would like to give special thanks to AGU’s

administrators in general and the Faculty of Foreign Languages in particular for
creating conditions for me to intern at the University Library. The place where I
could be exposed to a practical working environment. Thus, I can grasp a lot of
experience and improve my skills afterward the internship term.

Secondly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my internship

instructor, Mrs. Duong Thi Diem Phuc, MA. She gave me guidance and support
throughout my internship.

Additionally, I wish to show my appreciation to my supervisor, Vice-Director

Nguyen Thi Hong Loan, and all staff members at the Library of An Giang
University. They have already created favorable conditions for me to accomplish
every assigned task in the two-month internship. Particularly, I deeply thank Mrs.
Hong Loan for providing a lot of valuable lessons, and advice so that I can
improve my professional knowledge.

Finally, thank my dearest family and loved ones for supporting and
encouraging me when I lost motivation, especially my internship team, who were
by my side to help me when I was in trouble.

All in all, I am grateful to everyone who supported me in successfully

completing my internship.

PART A: INTRODUCTION

As a partial requirement for the training program at An Giang University,

seniors are required to participate in the internship. During this internship,
students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a real working
environment and apply the knowledge they have acquired so far to work.
Consequently, students can gain valuable experience and identify their strengths
and weaknesses, which helps them better define their future career paths.

Additionally, the internship environment also plays a vital role in navigating

and laying the initial foundation for students because it shapes the overall
experience and learning outcomes for interns. As an English student, I desire to
find a place where I can grasp more opportunities to enhance my professional
knowledge and skills in English; therefore, I consider An Giang University’s
Library the ideal place for me to pursue the internship.

During the internship, I had a chance to improve my translation abilities and

gain more experience and horizons about other skills at AGU’s Library. This
internship provided an excellent chance to apply and refine all the English skills I
have learned, aiming to improve them for better job prospects.

This report will cover what I accomplished during the training time, how I
applied the knowledge to the practical working environment, and what I have
learned from the practicum at AGU’s Library. Besides, It also shows the
advantages, difficulties – solutions as well as my suggestions.

Furthermore, the purpose of the report is to summarize the outcomes of a two-

month probation. To illustrate, this report will present the following content:

The first part describes the description of the AGU’s Library as well as
general information about the library.

The second part details my training experience, including what I did during
the training term, the difficulties faced, the advantages gained, how I overcame
problems during training time, and my personal experiences.

The final part provides conclusions as well as suggestions for the AGU’s
Library, Department of English Linguistics, Translation and Interpretation, the
Faculty of Foreign Languages of An Giang University, and An Giang University.

I hope that through this report, which expresses my intern experiences,

English majors at AGU will have the evaluation and consideration in selecting
suitable internship places for themselves.

students.

The Library's operation is always in close contact with the University's

mission and goals; creating and providing support for teaching, learning,
researching, and improving training quality in order to become a prestigious
university in the country and internationally.

3. Mission

II. INTERNSHIP ACTIVITIES
The internship period started from 26th February to 21th April 2024, from
Monday to Friday every week.

Working time:

Morning: 7:30 – 11:00

Afternoon: 13:30 – 17:00

On the first day of the internship, the intern group was warmly greeted by the
leaders of library units, who provided brief introductions to their roles and tasks
within the library. Following this, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Loan, the vice library
director and supervisor for the internship, presented Course 21's internship
program and Library work.

During the eight-week internship, we focused on three main tasks aligned with
the English major: E-news translation, Book review editing, and Mini research
about ChatGPT in translating news.

Besides, we were introduced to functions and works from the Library’s three
departments and performed their works:

1. Joining News writing and photography class from IT

2. Searching for ebook databases and Translating the information (Library
Information, Leaflets) from Service
3. Evaluating, comparing, and cross-referencing Vietnamese terms into
English from Acquisition and Cataloguing

1. E-News Translation

1.1. Brief description of E-News

E-News is a part of the University Library, ENews launched its readership in

October 2004; Now it’s called eNews and website address:
http://enews.agu.edu.vn.

Pham Thanh Hung

11
Internship Report Instructor: MA. Duong Thi Diem
Phuc
E-News is a place to reflect information on learning activities, student
movements as well as AGU lecturers’ teaching and research activities. This is a
useful platform for AGU students, to keep student memories about AGU.

E-News creates an opportunity for students to report their various academic

and extracurricular activities. Students gain great experience in communication
and time management, and in particular, improve their writing skills.

1.2 E-News Translation

With the aim of applying information technology to the work, specifically by

utilizing Chat GP for translation, translating news with the support of AI was the
most pivotal assignment during the internship. This is one of the new points of
our course. Divided into three groups, nine interns were tasked with translating
news provided by Mrs. Nguyen Ngoc Anh Thu, the IT vice leader, via Zalo
group. The majority of the news that I have translated has to do with activities
and events such as scholarship awards or AGU students’ highlighting activities.

Our work group consisted of Le Thi Thu Cuc, Nguyen Chi Khanh, and I. For
the assigned tasks, a person will be responsible for translating the news with the
support of Chat GPT to check grammar and simplify the structure, then other two
people will double-check before sending it to Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hong Loan who
was in charge of checking and giving feedback.

Despite working in a team and being supported by Chat GPT, I still

encountered some mistakes in the translation process, such as long, wordy
sentences, inappropriate vocabulary usage, and the tendency to maintain
Vietnamese sentence structures.

However, thanks to Mrs. Hong Loan’s dedicated help, I was able to complete
all of the required tasks. She has always supported and offered advice as well as
suggestions for our translation to be as polished as possible. In particular, Mrs.
Hong Loan will check and see whether it is appropriate. If not, she will offer us
feedback in which she will highlight in yellow any words, phrases, or sentences
that do not. I will implement her recommendations to improve the translation.

Mrs. Hong Loan has indicated that the words and phrases highlighted in color
need to be corrected. She gave us some feedback about the translation. In detail,
during the process of translating news, the important thing we need to focus on is
that we need to simplify the structure to convey the content in a way that is
concise to the readers. Moreover, pay attention to using common phrases or verbs
which is commonly used in writing, and avoid translating sentences too much in
the Vietnamese style.

Following the remarks of the supervisor, this is the complete translation.

2. Mini-research about Chat GPT

When it comes to applying ChatGPT in translation, we have been tasked with

a mini-research about ChatGPT. Here, we will explore the prominent
characteristics, limitations, and how we apply ChatGPT to news translation. This
assignment was still assigned by the group like the translation team. Our team
used a variety of commencing so that ChatGPT could give various outcomes for
the translation, and then we compared the results together and concluded. After
that, we had a presentation in front of Mrs. Hong Loan and all the internship
members.

Throughout the activity, my team enhanced our skills in applying information

technology in the 4.0 era, as well as improving our information search skills and

will edit some errors in grammar and abstract sentences. Our intern team edited
two book reviews: "Pirate Jack Looks for Treasure" by Gill Munton and "The
Adventures of a Plastic Bottle" by Alision Inches.

Through this experience, I gained a deeper understanding of what editing

entails. Furthermore, through Ms. Loan's feedback, I the other team members
learned what aspects to pay attention to during editing: style, grammar, respect
for the original content, and plagiarism checks.

For me, this was one of the most interesting activities I experienced during my
internship.

This is the completed edition of “Pirate Jack Looks for Treasure" by Gill
Munton reviewed by Gia Vỹ, edited by the intern team and posted on E-News.

Pirate Jack Looks for Treasure" by Gill Munton

Anyone who grew up with Disney TV programs is likely familiar with the film
Peter Pan. When asked about their favorite character, many of them respond in
unison, choosing either the courageous young Peter Pan, the kind girl Wendy, or
the sociable kids.

Clearly, the bearded and shaggy-haired pirate is not welcomed by anyone. It
appears that pirates often play bad guys in films. But are pirates in general mean
people? To show readers the normal journey of a pirate, the small book "Pirate
Jack Looks for Treasure" by Gill Munton, illustrated by Mark Ruffle, described
the journey of a pirate's quest for treasure.
The book is a part of the Young Explorers Phonics Level 2 series for
intermediate English learner and it was published in 2011. The book has been
organized logically and systematically to ensure its readers can understand its
contents. There are guiding notes for readers on the front of the book. Following
the story's conclusion, there will be a practice and memorization section. The
section includes three tasks: pronouncing words correctly, providing examples,
and discussing relevant topics. Distinctive artwork aligns with every word and
various objects. Additionally, a test at the conclusion of the book evaluate how
much vocabulary the readers can recall and understand.
Outside of educational institutions, this book is noteworthy because it reflects a
positive aspect of the pirates' personality. In this series, Jack is a pirate. All he
has is a little boat, binoculars, and a fishing rod; he is not in charge of a large ship
or crew. Just like other ordinary pirates, Jack sails to sea with a seagull on a quest
to find wealth.
While adventuring, he came across a treasure map, a whale, and another large
boat. He found a boy after figuring out his destination, and they became friends.
After reaching the treasure location, he gave the seagull a roll of wool, which he
found while digging to help it might build a nest. Jack then dug up something to
help the boy beside him. Despite his efforst, he was unable to find the desired
treasure he desired, which made him desperate. However, a miracle occured right
as he was about to give up. Can you guess what he uncovered in the end?

4. Other intern activities

During the internship, I was also introduced to functions and tasks of the
Library’s Three departments and performed their tasks:

4.1. Joining News writing and photography class

Mrs. Nguyen Ngoc Anh Thu, the IT vice leader, was in charge of training us.
Aside from translating news from IT, I had the opportunity to learn and practice
many new skills through the basic news writing class and basic photography
training:

Firstly, the basic news writing class helped me grasp the process of gathering
news and constructing news content. Fortunately, I had a chance to practice
gathering news at The program “ Học Bổng Ước mơ cho em”.

During the event, I record the main content both my notebook and
smartphone, then write the Vietnames news so that Mrs. Anh Thu check and give

feedbacks.

Secondly, the basic photography class helped me learn basic photography
skills as well as widen my understanding of how to take photos during news
gatherings. We also request Mrs. Anh Thu hold a basic Photoshop class to widen

our skills.

These skills not only helped me improve my work but also expanded my
knowledge and skills in the fields of communication and information technology.
These experiences were truly interesting and beneficial during my internship.

4.3. Evaluating, Comparing, and cross-referencing Vietnamese terms into
English

Through the guidance of Mrs. Dinh Thi Bich Ngoc, librarian leader in the
Acquisition – Cataloguing department, I deeply understood their roles and tasks:

 Supplementing documents

 Cataloging and processing documents

 Library clerical work

In addition, I had the opportunity to visit their workspace, which helped me

understand more about the library's work in handling various document sources
and books.

Mrs. Ngọc also introduced tasks that language students can do in their
department, such as evaluating, comparing, and cross-referencing Vietnamese
terms into English, but because of limited time, we could not do this task.

All in all, these experiences in three library departments sparked interest

among interns in a new field that utilizes English, creating enthusiasm for their
internship experience.

III. ADVANTAGES, DIFFICULTIES – SOLUTIONS AND
PERSONAL EXPERIENCES

1. Advantages

Working as an intern in the library is such an amazing opportunity for me.

There are a lot of advantages that will be listed below.

First and foremost, during practice for 8 weeks at An Giang University’s

Library, I received the enthusiastic guidance and support of all staff at the library.
They always create favorable conditions for me to complete the assigned tasks
successfully the most. Especially, our supervisor, Mrs Nguyen Thi Hong Loan,
always cares about and supports everything from health to work, as well as gives
me useful advice for my internship work and my future career.

Secondly, working as a translator is a very valuable experience that will

enhance my CV, especially for those who plan to pursue a career in the
translation field. Moreover, it offers a more job opportunity to work as a librarian
when we were practiced the library’s work.

Thirdly, I learned more about many skills, from major skills to soft skills such
as translating newsletters, public speaking, time management, and teamwork...to
adapt the future pursuits.

Finally, the library internship was a dynamic, creative, and stress-free

environment where my passion for the work and strong English skills contributed
to my successful completion.

2. Difficulties – Solutions

Eight weeks is not a long time, but it is also not an easy time.

2.1. E-News Translation

 Difficulties – Causes

Although I acquired translation theories as well as practiced and took several

tests in class, I faced some challenges during the translation process. Sometimes,
I still struggle with source texts. Initially, I made errors in processing and
expressing sentence structures from Vietnamese to English. My first drafts
lacked consistency in a paragraph, and being wordy was the biggest mistake I
made.

For example, ”The program awarded Phuc Hau a scholarship worth 80 million
VND, a 50 million VND scholarship to Thuy Nguyen, and a 40 million VND
scholarship to Van Man with the desire to support diligent and resilient students.
In addition, twenty more An Giang University students received scholarships
from the Bao An Social Fund, each valued at 5 million VND”. Mrs. Hong Loan
provided feedback on the expression of this paragraph, noting a lack of
consistency among structures, which made it difficult for readers to understand.

 Solutions

To address these errors, I have been using sticky notes on my laptop to jot
down the mistakes I have made from Mrs Hong Loan’s feedback in translations
so that I can avoid them in future translations. It's fair to say that sticky notes
have been a powerful tool that has helped me throughout the internship. Besides,
ChatGPT also aids me in checking grammar and simplifying the complex
sentence structure.

Additionally, I will actively seek guidance from Mrs. Loan to clarify any
uncertainties I have and ask her to provide strategies to rectify them. I have also
studied the "Revising sentences" section in the book Mrs. Loan recommended to
us to improve the English sentence construction.

2.2. Time pressure and work

 Difficulties – causes

Initially, spending all weekdays at the library was tough for me. I spent two
weeks getting used to the new work environment. In addition, besides library
tasks, I also had to work on the internship report and other class projects that
would be handled and presented upon completing the internship. Therefore,
making a plan is necessary for me to complete all the work effectively and on
time.

 Solutions

I have made a sensible plan to complete the internship. In detail, after four
weeks of internship, I and other members began writing the internship report.
The weekly reports and internship diary were immensely helpful for me when I
started writing the internship report because they documented the tasks I
completed as well as the lessons learned. Therefore, note and record the process
of intern works are the important thing . Furthermore, all team members have
been supporting each other and allocating time reasonably to ensure that we can
collectively complete the tasks on time.

3. Personal experience

The importance of clearly identifying personal strengths and weaknesses.

Recognizing personal strengths allows me to leverage and enhance them, while
also pinpointing areas for improvement. This self-awareness is instrumental in
personal development, both professionally and personally.

In addition, Being proactive in seeking out and experiencing various tasks is

the key to learning new skills in the internship environment. In detail, I have
learned how to write news articles and take basic newsletter photos.

Finally, I always pay attention to my attitude and behavior at the internship

site because it helps me become more professional.

PART C: CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS

I. Conclusion

The internship period holds significant importance for all students. It offers me
the chance to immerse myself in a practical work setting and put my acquired
knowledge into practice. As a result, I can accumulate valuable experiences, and
recognize my strengths and weaknesses, which will be useful for my future
career. Furthermore, with the support of all staff at the library, I had an
opportunity to understand more about the nature of translation work as well as
have practical experiences and exposure to various individuals. Especially, when
I learn about the work in different departments at the library, it opens a job
opportunity for me in a new field. I will cherish and appreciate the memorable
moments when I intern at AGU’s Library. My best wishes to the staff of AGU's
Library, may you always find happiness in life, and may the AGU's Library
continue to thrive and grow stronger each day.

II. Suggestions

1. Suggestions for An Giang University’s Library

An Giang University’s library is a great environment so that English majors

can practice and complete their internship. However, I hope that AGU’s library
can link foreign students or teachers to exchange and practice together so that we
may improve my speaking skills as well as enhance my confidence and
communication abilities. Moreover, we can organize some events about English
for AGU students.

2. Suggestions for the Department of English Linguistics, Translation,

and Interpretation

After this highly useful internship period, I would like to propose some ideas
for the Faculty of Foreign Languages. I believe the internship should be

completed earlier like the third year or summer term because it helps students
gain more experience and gain a better understanding of the realities of work.

3. Suggestions for the Faculty of Foreign Languages at An Giang

University

Organizing more conferences, workshops, and seminars about translation and

interpretation skills as well as English learning methods. It will enhance our
professional knowledge. Moreover, I hope that FFL can organize some practical
activities about translation and interpretation so that students can expose
themselves to reality experience, and map out the plan to improve and foster their
skills before entering into the internship.

4. Suggestions for An Giang University

An Giang University should upgrade the wifi connection because almost all
the assigned tasks need to be done with a strong wifi connection to find and
process information.
