SUBMITTED TO : MA’AM SHAHNILA ANSARI
CONTEXT
• FORM FOLLOW FUNCTION
• EXAMPLES
• FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION IN OBJECTS
• FUNCTION FOLLOW FORM
• IMPORTANCE OF FUNCTION FOLLOW FORM
• FUNCTION AND FORM ARE ONE
FORM FOLLOW FUNCTION

• Louis Sullivan, a Known as father of modern architecture, coined

the phrase "form ever follows function.
• BORN date : 1856 In Boston, US
• The origins of this concept can be traced back to the early 20th
century.
• “Form Follows Function" is a design principle that emphasizes
the idea that the shape and appearance of an object should be
primarily based on its intended function or purpose
FORM FOLLOW FUNCTION
EXAMPLES:
• The Wainwright Building is an excellent
example of form follows function. Louis Sullivan,
who coined the phrase, designed this building
to reflect the office work that would take place
within, making it more utilitarian in design.
Located at downtown st. Louis missouri

• Form following function, also known as

utilitarian design, is not a brand-new idea. The
principle behind it, on the other hand, has been
around since the early 20th century, and it
states that a building or object's shape should
be primarily determined by its function and
purpose, rather than just its aesthetics
FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION IN OBJECTS

• A Design or style of an object follows the function of the object

• For example: A chair's shape is designed according to the exact purpose of its existence. If the
chair is built for people to have a quick nap, the chairs shape must be long enough to make the
people feel comfortable and cozy.
FUNCTION FOLLOWS FORM

• Reciprocal of the principle form follows function

• FRANK Lloyd wright’s demonstrated the idea of function
follows form.
• The principle of "Function Follows Form" suggests that the
aesthetics or visual appearance of an object should take
precedence and influence its function.
• In other words, the design process begins with a focus on
form, and the function of the object is adapted or developed
to align with the desired visual outcome.
FUNCTION FOLLOW FORM

• In "Function Follows Form," how something looks

takes the lead in deciding how it works. This means
that the appearance or artistic expression becomes
the main influence on how an object functions.
• This approach often leads to designs that catch the
eye and stand out, sometimes going beyond what
we typically expect. Supporters of this idea say it
gives more freedom for creativity,
• but critics worry that it might sacrifice how practical
or easy to use something is. So, while it allows for
cool and unique designs, there's a balance to strike
between looks and practicality
FUNCTION FOLLOWS FORM
EXAMPLE

• Guggenheim museum’s concept is based on function follows form

• The form is spiral
IMPORTANCE OF FUNCTION FOLLOWS FORM
• It gives a building or space a more unique shape form while still severing the same purpose and
function.
• Emphasis on buildings, facades, street composition, dimensions.
• Specify building massing, height and relation to street and public spaces.
• Regulatory focus on form, instead of density and use
FORM AND FUNCTION ARE ONE

• Frank Lloyd Wright introduced the word ‘organic’ into his philosophy of architecture as early as
1908. It was an extension of the teachings of his mentor Louis Sullivan whose slogan “form
follows function” became the mantra of modern architecture. Wright changed this phrase to
“form and function are one,” using nature as the best example of this integration
• Organic architecture strives to unify space, to blend interiors and exteriors, and creates a
harmonic
