Definition: What is Mechatronics?
Mechatronics word is derived from Mechanical “Mech” and
Electronics “tronics”
The term mechatronics was first used in the late 1960s by a
Japanese Electric Company to describe the engineering
integration between mechanical and electrical systems
Since then it has spread throughout Europe and is growing
is the USA
Mechatronics is the integration of microprocessor control
systems, electrical systems, and mechanical systems
(Bolton)
The term mechatronics is used to denote a rapidly
developing, interdisciplinary field of engineering that deals
with the design of products whose function relies on the
synergistic integration of mechanical, electrical, and
electronic components connected by a control architecture
(Histand and Alciatore)

Definition: What is Mechatronics?
Mechatronics is the synergetic integration
of physical systems with information
technology and complex-decision making
in the design, manufacture and operation
of industrial products and processes
(Tomizuka)
Mechatronics is the analysis, design,
manufacturing, synergistic integration,
and maintenance of mechanics with
electronics through intelligent computer
control (Tutunji & Abdrabbo)
11
Introduction
Mechatronics is synergistic integration of
mechanical engineering, electronics and
intelligent computer control in design and
manufacture of products and processes
12
Mechatronics
The synergistic combination of mechanical, electrical, and
computer engineering
•Emphasis on integrated design for products
•Optimal combination of appropriate technologies 13
14
The Following Special Formulation is Offered
Mechatronics studies synergistic
fusion of precise
mechatronical units,
electronic,
electro technical and computer components
for the purpose of designing and
manufacturing qualitatively new
modules,
systems,
machines and complexes of machines
with intellectual control of their
functional movements

Comments to the Definition
Mechatronics studies special conceptual approach to
construction of machines.
The definition emphasizes synergetic character of
components’ integration in mechatronic objects.
Integrated mechatronic components are always
chosen at the designing stage.
Methods of parallel designing serve as methodological
basis for Mechatronic Systems (MS) development.
The main objects that mechatronics studies are
mechatronic modules.
MS are intended to perform a set movement.
In MS methods of advanced intelligent control are
used to secure high quality in performing precise
movements. 16
Computer Control Device Basic Functions
Control of mechanical movement process
on-line with current sensor data analysis.
Arrangements to control MS functional
movements.
Interaction with operator via human-
machine interface off-line and on-line
interaction at the moment of MS
movement.
Data exchange between peripheral devices,
sensors and other devices of the system. 17
The Core of Mechatronic Approach
It consists in integrating of components probably of
different physical nature into a uniform functional module.
in other words
At the stage of designing one interface, as a
separate device, is excluded out of a traditional
structure, but physical essence of transformation
carried out by this module is kept.

The present goal is a spatial integration with other functional
elements in the area of sensors as well as in the area of
actuators.
It would create an “intelligent” unit, i.e. an intelligent sensor
(integration of a measured values sensor, an analog/digital
converter and a microprocessor) and an intelligent actuator
(an integration of a digital/analog converter, an adapter circuit
or a power amplifier, or even a microprocessor).
The intelligent sensor measures analog physical quantities, for
example pressure, temperature, velocity, it digit measured
values and transfers the signal - suitably adjusted - to
information processing devices.
The intelligent actuator is directly activated by the digital signal
coming from the corresponding information processing device.24

Modelling
Why should we study modeling?
A system is characterized by the fact that we can
say what belongs to it and what does not. We can
specify how it interacts with its
environment Hence it can be observed and
controlled.
There are variables that are generated by the
environment and that influence the behavior of
the system. These are called the inputs of the
system.
There are other variables that are determined by
the system and that in turn influence the
behavior of its environment. These are called the
outputs of the system.
System, Experiment
and Model
A system is a potential source of data
An experiment is the process of extracting data
from a system by exerting it through its inputs
A model M for a system S and an experiment E
is anything to which E can be applied in order
to answer questions about S
Model verification
Model verification investigates
whether the executable model
reflects the conceptual model within
the specified limits of accuracy.
Verification transfers the conceptual
model’s field of application to the
executable model.
Model validation
Model validation, on the other hand,
should tell us whether the executable
model is suitable for fulfilling the
envisaged task within its field of
application. In other words:
Verification ensures the system is
modelled right, whereas validation is all
about modelling the right system. Various
degrees of validity can be defined for a
model:
