Directed Writing
To create a new piece of writing, you need to jot down points from both texts
and start writing any one of conventions (Report, Speech, Article, Letter, Email)
by incorporating its features. Uplifting of lines from texts is not allowed. Follow
the correct pattern of each convention given. Word limit 250-350 words
Features of Conventions
Speech:
1. It is written in first , second and third person pronoun.
2. Use of rhetorical questions or tag questions and a technique of listing
3. Repetition of a phrase and a sentence
4. Addition of facts and figures
5. Use of transitional devices
6. Mention purpose of delivering a speech in first paragraph
7. Start it with greetings
8. End with a note of thanks
9. Avoid slang language
10.Use of contrast or comparison to make your point stronger
11. Use of expressions like really, as you know , well, obviously
Report Writing
1. Opening paragraph must give summary of key information/over view of
both texts.
2. Focus on factual information
3. Add rhetorical questions
4. It is written in third person
5. Formal and unbiased
6. Give facts and figures
7. Use of contrast /comparison to make your point stronger
8. Last paragraph is based on recommendations
Article
1. Add engaging title to grab readers’ attention, and that needs to reflect your
stance in the content.
2. Provide glimpse of what article will cover, but indirectly.
3. Each paragraph should focus on specific ideas.
4. Use of contrast /comparison to make your point stronger
5. Use of rhetorical questions
6. Last paragraph is based on opinion.
7. Incorporate evidence and examples.
Letter Writing: Formal /Informal
1 Mention purpose of writing in the first paragraph
2 Use of contrast /comparison to make your point stronger
3 Last paragraph is based on opinion
4 Add personal feelings and qualities of the one whom you are writing to
connect to point of view/ choice you want to recommend (in informal
letter)
5 Language is based on whether you are writing formal or informal letter.
6 Avoid slang language in both types of letters
Composition
Narrative Writing
Features
1.Sustain readers’ interest through vivid description of characters ,their emotions
and setting
2.Add flashback and multiple characters and settings to make your plot
complicated .
3.In medius Res : the stories begin in the middle of action (in the middle of
things)
4.In ultimate res : the story begins with its outcome or ending and then reveals
events in reverse order.
5.To create suspense ,drama or anxiety through cliff hangers like
stop talking for a minute “ he cautioned ,do you hear the foot steps ‘
‘I admit I was wrong’
‘Now he finished his quest,what was he going to do with himself ‘
To find answers of such sentences ,readers would read the whole narrative .They
are compelled to find out what happens next.
6.Use idioms ,good expression and few hard vocabulary words.
7.Use dialogues, but that should have some importance in a story.
8.Use interrogative and imperative sentences too to bring variety in language.
Descriptive Writing
1. Use a variety of sensory detail (sight,sound,smell,taste,touch)
2. Use of linguistic devices such as imagery & sound effect to convey mood
and atmosphere.
3.Use of metaphor, similes
4.Vividly convey what a specific person ,setting or experience like rather
than tell a story.
