DIGITAL PAINTING (DP)
DESCRIPTION:
Digital painting is an emerging art form in which traditional painting techniques such as watercolor, oils, impasto,
etc. are applied using digital tools by means of a computer and software, a graphics program offering a virtual
canvas and painting box with a large amount of brushes, colors and other supplies. Digital painting differs from
other forms of digital art, particularly computer-generated art, in that it does not involve the computer render-
ing from a model. The artist uses painting techniques to create the digital painting directly on the computer. All
digital painting programs try to mimic the use of physical media through various brushes and paint effects.

Digital painting thrives mostly in production art. Digital painting software such as Adobe Photoshop and many
others, gives an artist’s a similar environment to a physical painter: a canvas, painting tools, mixing palettes, and
a multitude of color options.

MATTE PAINTING (MP)
DESCRIPTION:
A matte painting is a painted representation of a landscape, set or distant location that allows filmmakers to
create the illusion of an environment that is nonexistent in real life or would otherwise be too expensive or im-
possible to build or visit.

Historically, matte painters and film technicians have used various techniques to combine a matte-painted image
with live-action/3D animation film footage. At its best, depending on the skill levels of the artists and techni-
cians, the effect is “seamless” and creates environments that would otherwise be impossible to film.

A good matte painting reflects the following qualities of an artist:

• A good solid understanding of Light and Exposure
• Painting in a photographic style
• A good understanding of Perspective (strong focal point)
• A strong Composition
• Some Camera Knowledge
• Color (for matching plate)

PHOTOGRAPHY (PHTGR)
DESCRIPTION:
Photographs are amazing. Photographs evoke the essence of places we have not been, we perhaps will not
return to, and should never forget. Photographs “become” through making choices, and great photographs be-
come through making right choices. Right choices are the direct result of the knowledge of the photographer.
Great photographs are NOT, however, strictly the result of owning fancy equipment. Anyone using most any
camera can take an incredible photograph.

CHARACTER ANIMATION (CHA ANM)
DESCRIPTION:
In computer animation, character animation is the creation of an animated person or animal. The animator will
make a unique character-generated individual and decide how the character will look, move, and interact with
its environment.

Character animation is a specialized area of the animation process, which involves bringing animated characters
to life. The role of a Character Animator is analogous to that of a film or stage actor, and character animators are
often said to be “actors with a pencil” (or a mouse).

Character animators breathe life in their characters, creating the illusion of thought, emotion and personality.
