Participant Information Sheet & Instructions

Invitation

You are being invited to participate in a research study. We are a research team interested
in understanding how people interact with AI systems. This information sheet provides all
the details you need to decide whether you wish to accept this invitation. You are under no
obligation to participate: you need not read on, you might read the information and then
decide not to proceed, and if you start the study and do not wish to continue, simply close
this window.

Am I suitable for the study?

To take part in this study, you must be at least 18 years old, must reside in the US, and be
fluent in reading and writing in English. In addition, you must have an active Prolific
account, have completed at least 20 prior tasks, and have a 95% or greater approval rate
on prior tasks.

What will I have to do?

In this study, you will interact with an AI system through an online chat interface.
Specifically, you will read some instructions, chat with the AI system, and then answer
some multiple-choice and open-ended questions about your interaction and your
impression of the system. At the end of the study, we will also ask you some optional
questions for any feedback you have on the study.

How long will it take?

The entire study should take around 30 minutes.

Are there any risks?

This study poses minimal risks outside of the usual risks that people experience when
using their computers, using the internet, and going through daily life. The chat with the AI
system presents a small risk of reading inappropriate or offensive written statements.

If anything goes wrong during the study, you can communicate with us directly via the
Prolific messaging system and leave the task. We will still pay you as normal in this
situation.

How much will I be paid?

You will be paid 7.50 GBP for completing this study.

What data will we collect?

If you choose to take part in this study, we may collect the following types of data:

Your Prolific ID

Per your agreement with Prolific, this is a unique identifier which is provided via the Prolific
platform. Unless you choose to provide us with additional information (see below), we are
not able to identify you based on your Prolific ID. We may use your Scale ID in the form of
unique identifiers (e.g. a random code assigned to you) in order to communicate with you
about a study. We may use your Prolific ID in the form of unique identifiers (e.g. a random

Demographic Data

We may collect limited demographic data relating to you. This may be data as provided by
you to Prolific and to us via the Prolific platform, or we may directly ask you for voluntary
demographic data within the experiment app itself.

Research Data

The data we collect during a study will be known as "Research Data". This includes your
decisions (for example, written inputs, key presses, mouse or touchscreen events) and
response times during the task as well as your answers to any pre or post-experiment
questionnaires.

Additional Information

Please do not provide us with any personal data during a study/task. We will not collect
any personal data from you during a study/task (and do not require you to provide us with
any personal data during a study/task). If you choose to take part in the study, we strongly
advise that you do not provide us with any information at all that will allow us to identify
you, and please communicate via the Prolific messaging service if you have any questions
about the study.

What happens when I have completed the study?

Prolific ID

We may use your Prolific ID in the form of unique identifiers (e.g. a random code assigned
to you) in order to communicate with you about a study.

Research Data

After the Research Data is analysed, we will write up the results and may submit it for
publication in journals or present it at academic conferences. Samples of Research Data
may be included in such publications. Research Data may be shared with other
researchers external to Alphabet Inc. (“Alphabet”) or potentially posted online once the
study is published, in line with requirements from the relevant academic journal. Your
Prolific ID will not be shared.
Additional Information

As noted above, we strongly advise that you do not provide us with any information at all
which may allow us to identify you. In the event that you voluntarily provide us with
information which may allow us to identify you, this data will be handled in accordance
with applicable privacy laws.

Rights in Research Data

By participating in a study/task, you assign to Alphabetany right, title and interest that you
may have in the Research Data. If applicable law does not permit such assignment of
rights, then you grant to Alphabet a perpetual, irrevocable, exclusive, worldwide,
sublicensable, royalty-free licence to use the Research Data without restriction for
Alphabet’s current or future purposes.

What if there are any problems?

Alphabet holds public liability insurance. It holds insurance which covers the design,
management and conduct of its studies.

or presentations, and that any information that could personally identify me will not
be included in any publication.

7. I agree to keep my involvement in a study, the content of a study, any information

provided to me during a study, and all information associated with a study,
confidential at all times, and will not disclose or onwards share such information
with any other party, or make any copies of this information.

8. I further acknowledge that my Research Data may be stored on an overseas server.
