A.INTRODUCTION
Video editing lets creatives make both subtle and significant alterations to video files. They
can make minor but meaningful edits to combine multiple clips, alter audio volume, speed up
and slow down footage, or correct color and lighting. They can also make significant
changes, such as altering backgrounds using a green screen and chroma key software,
adding in special effects or music, or removing background obstructions. These kinds of
edits will come together to help creatives produce professional quality videos, and learning
these skills will open the door to a high-paying and in-demand career field.
There are several
types of video
editing, but one of
the standards are:
Linear and Non-Linear
Linear Editing
Linear editing lives up to its name—the process
involves arranging and editing your footage one
after the other in sequential order. The technique
has mostly been replaced with nonlinear video editing
software, but some editors still choose to use the
technique due to its simplicity and structure. Live
television is the best example.
Non-Linear Editing
Non-linear editing allows video editors to revise the
shots on video servers, drives, or hard disks without
needing to go in any specific order. Nonlinear editing
is the primary editing technique used today. You can
edit your video in you computer, phone or even in
your laptop!
B. Example of
an edits in
Video Editing:
STANDARD CUTS
Standard cuts are the most basic and
common form of transition in video editing.
The standard cut simply moves the footage
from one shot to another, seamlessly moving
the video and narrative along without any
special effects.
JUMP CUTS
Jump cuts edit two sequential shots of the
same subject in quick succession with
minimal change in the subject or camera's
position. Jump cuts in online videos are often
paired with a zoom effect—known as zoom
jump cuts—to add energy
J-CUTS
A J-cut will have audio from the proceeding
video clip enter the next shot before the first
shot has finished.
L-CUTS
An L-cut has audio from the first shot bleed
into the second shot.
CUTTING ON ACTION
Cutting when the subject is moving instead of
after each movement to create a more interesting
and fluid scene.
VIDEO SPEED
Switching up the speed of your video is an easy
way to catch people’s attention. Slow down a clip
to make the scene last longer. This can create
funny moments, like watching a person fall in slow
motion. Slowed videos can also have dramatic
effects, like a bullet leaving a gun at a drawn-out
pace
VIDEO FILTERS
Video filters add a special effect to a person or
scene. You can use fitlers to create effects like
blurring, smoothing, pixelating, and more. There
are many reasons to use filters. They can make a
scene look dramatic, otherworldly or artistic.
Often, they are used to enhance a person's
appearance or create an atmosphere in the video.
MOTION GRAPHICS
Motion graphics refers to animated graphic design.
This means text or images that are animated and
move within the video. You can animate a whole
image or word, or elements of it can change. For
example, you could create a title and have the
font or color change.
INTRO TITLE
Motion graphics refers to animated graphic design.
This means text or images that are animated and
move within the video. You can animate a whole
image or word, or elements of it can change. For
example, you could create a title and have the
font or color change.
COLOR CORRECTION
Color correction is a crucial step in the editing
process. It’s amazing how making subtle changes
to the color of your video can have a powerful
overall effect. With color correction, the aim is to
fix any problems with how your footage looks. It’s
also important to make the colors in your videos
match the natural tones in the real world.
C. Usual Interface of
a Video Editing
Software
MEDIA BROWSER PANEL
Media Browser Panel: When starting a new
project, this is where the user can import the files
they’ll need. These files will then be placed into the
Project panel.
SOURCE MONITOR PANEL
Source Monitor Panel: This panel is for
editing individual clips for a project. The
user can define the length with In and Out
points, with In being the start and Out
being the end.
TIMELINE PANE
Timeline Panel: Usually located under
the Program Monitor panel, the Timeline
is an overview of all the clips, layers,
and audio layers together.
TOOL PANEL:
Tool Panel: A compact panel that contains all the tools
used for editing. The Select, Ripple Edit, Rolling Edit, Crop,
Track Select Forward, Razor, Pan, Pen, Text tools, and
more are accessed from here.
EFFECTS PANEL:
Any effect can be applied by dragging
and dropping the name onto the desired
layer in the Timeline
EFFECT CONTROLS PANEL:
This panel is usually nested within
the same area as the Source
Monitor panel. Here is where the
user can adjust and control any
effects applied to layers from the
Effects panel.
