Reading Intervention

Learning all subjects effectively is coined with the ability of every student to read

and comprehend the things they read. To elevate the level of students reading ability

from frustration to instructional to independent remedial reading activities should be

done. This way it will help students to learn and understand all subject area. Based on

the data gathered these students need to enhance their reading abilities - students have

to improve and enhance reading fluency and comprehension. I asked their teacher to

excuse the identified students during cleaning time at 4:00 – 5:00 pm to conduct

remedial session, give them different reading intervention activities. I actually use only

30 minutes of their cleaning time, I don’t make use all the one hour of their cleaning time

for these students need to walked home. We do oral reading and silent reading,

sometimes I gave them activities to answer especially Student R, I focused on his

reading, so I gave him CVC activities. Written and oral activities were given. Student O

and M were given short reading stories with comprehension check. I make used the

stories in the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (PHIL-IRI) manual 2018 of the

Department of Education. I also found short stories and reading activities online and I

find it useful. (see figure 1).

Discussions and Conclusion

This remedial session focuses on three learners and investigated the question

“How will reading remediation improves reading skills when you have reading difficulty?”

What could be the reasons for these students to have this difficulty? and based on the

result that if students will undergo remedial session reading difficulty can be enhanced

and improve. In addition, a month of remediation shows a little improvement this only

means that if they were given enough and rigid time, tremendous increase or

improvement will be shown. As to its reading difficulty, student R improve from

murmuring to uttering a three letter word now and can read simple phrases. He shows

that he is now trying to read phrases producing the sounds of the letter. On the other it

also has limitation; it was done in an identified learner within a short period of time. The

teacher incharge was not the teacher of the identified students so she has no control of

the whereabouts of the students, if they do not show up during the scheduled date the

teacher incharge has nothing to do with it. The result of this remediation shows that it is

effective especially if it is on regular basis and if student will show up and will never

skips the session. This study can sum up that if a student was checked and identified its

reading difficulty earlier and was addressed right away it will not be a problem with the
teacher in the secondary as well as with the student. Student will gain confidence. The

designed given by the teacher on intervention was simple and therefore can be

improved and will be supported by other studies. A 30 minutes a day as what the

intervention was made can facilitate the needs of the students and can improve if not at

all eliminate the difficulty encountered.

The Gentle Octopus

Years ago sailors told stories about giant monsters living in the sea. Some of
these monsters had eight arms and could squeeze a person to death. It’s true that an
octopus has eight arms called tentacles but it’s not a monster.

Most of the octopuses are not bigger than a person’s fist and they do not attack
people. Actually an octopus is gentle and friendly. It can be shy, but it can also make
friends with people. Some octopuses in the aquarium even like people to care for
them.

Questions:

1. What is the story about?

2. What does the story say about the octopus?
3. How big is the octopus?
4. Why did the sailors called the octopus a monster?
5. Do you think an octopus can be a good pet? Why? Or why not?
6. What would you do if you see an octopus?
7. If God would give eight arms, how would you use them?
8. Octopuses live under the sea. How can you protect them and other marine life?
9. When you say “squeeze a person to death”, what happens to the person?
10. What are tentacles?
