ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS
GROUP ASSIGNMENT: ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS IN REAL LIFE
Objective:
This group assignment aims to provide students hands-on experience applying the engineering
design process, from identifying a real-life problem to creating a detailed product design. Each
group must design a product or solution that enhances some aspect of the user's life. The assignment
is divided into two parts, contributing 50% of the total marks.
Part 1: Problem Definition, Concept Generation, and Concept Selection
(Marks: 50% of total assignment)
Tasks:
1. Problem Identification and Definition (15%)
o Identify a real-life problem faced by the users of the specified product using surveys (at
least 30 respondents).
o Define the problem clearly, focusing on specific user needs (at least 5), objectives, and
design constraints.
o Determine the corresponding engineering characteristics (at least 5) based on the user
needs.
o Complete a streamlined House of Quality.
2. Product Design Specification (PDS) (10%)
o Develop a Product Design Specification (PDS) that outlines the essential requirements,
performance metrics, constraints, and target specifications for the product.
o Ensure the PDS is detailed and provides a solid framework for the design process.
3. Concept Generation (15%)
o Use brainstorming, SCAMPER, and morphological analysis techniques to generate a
minimum of FOUR (4) different design concepts.
o Document your idea generation process, highlighting how different methods contributed
to concept diversity.
4. Concept Evaluation and Selection (10%)
o Evaluate the generated concepts using the Pugh Chart and Weighted Decision Matrix.
o Justify your final concept selection by comparing alternatives against a clear set of
evaluation criteria.
Submission Requirements for Part 1:
• A printed report that includes the problem definition, PDS, concept generation process, and the
concept evaluation/selection process, with sketches or diagrams where necessary, as well as
appendices (survey form, summary of survey results, etc.). Please attach the evaluation rubric
on the last page of the report.
• A recorded PowerPoint presentation summarising the critical decisions and final concept
selected.
Due Date: MONDAY, 9TH OF DECEMBER 2024, 8:00 AM through E-Learning UniMAP

Part 2: Embodiment Design and Detail Design
(Marks: 50% of total assignment)
Tasks:
1. Product Architecture and Configuration Design (20%)
o Develop the architecture of the selected concept by breaking it down into its major
subsystems and components.
o Use diagrams to show the product's configuration and how the components interact to
fulfil the objectives and requirements defined in Part 1.
2. Parametric and Detail Design (20%)
o Define the dimensions, tolerances, and materials for the critical components of the
product.
o Justify your decisions on dimensions and materials based on performance, cost, and
feasibility.
o Include detailed CAD drawings or sketches that illustrate the critical components of the
design.
3. Modeling and Evaluation (10%)
o Create a digital model to demonstrate the product’s functionality.
o Evaluate the model's performance, identify any limitations, and propose potential
improvements.
o Provide a summary of modifications made based on the evaluation data.
Submission Requirements for Part 2:
• A comprehensive printed report that includes product architecture, parametric and detail design,
material selection, and CAD drawings or sketches. Please attach the evaluation rubric on the last
page of the report.
• A recorded demonstration of the digital model and evaluation of its performance.
Due Date: MONDAY, 6TH OF JANUARY 2025, 8:00 AM through E-Learning UniMAP
Peer Review Notification
All group members are expected to actively participate in the project by attending meetings,
contributing to discussions, and completing their assigned tasks on time.
For members who do not cooperate or fulfil their responsibilities, five marks will be deducted from
their score for each complaint submitted and approved.
A peer review form will be provided at the end of each assignment part to document each member’s
contribution.
I appreciate your commitment to a successful team effort!
