1.1 STUDENTS INDUSTRIALWORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME (SIWES)

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES),is a programme des

igned to help Nigerian

Tertiary Institution Students to acquire practical knowledge which they are likely to m

eet after graduation.

The programme is operated by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) with coordin

ating

agencies, employers of labour institutions. This program was founded by The Federal

Government of Nigeria (FGN) which is undergone for a period of three (3) to six (6)

months for polytechnics, colleges of Education and Universities undergraduates, who

variations depend on the type of Institution.

1.2 AIMS AND OBJECTIVE OF SIWES

The Specific Objectives of SIWES are:

i. To prepare student for the working situation they are likely to meet after school;

ii. To make the transition from school to the world of work more easier and to

enhance the student for work placement;

iii. To expose student to work method and technique in handling equipment and

real situation thereby bringing the gap between school with and practical;

1
v. Enlist and strengthen employer’s involvement in the entire educational process

of preparing university graduates for employment in industry.

1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF SIWES

The scheme was designed to expose students to industrial environment and

enable them develop occupational competencies so that they can readily contribute

their quota to national, economical and technological development after graduation.

The major benefit accruing to students who participate conscientiously in Students

Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) are the skills and competencies they

acquire. The relevant production skills remain a part of the recipients of industrial

training as life-long assets which cannot be taken away from them. This is because the

knowledge and skills acquired through training are internalized and become relevant

when required to perform jobs or functions.

3.2 INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE

Over the course of my first week, I was introduced to web development, and also

HTML(Hypertext Markup Language),various elements and also a basic code in

HTML containing header and body.

In my second week , I was introduced to CSS (cascading style sheets)which is a

method used to give more design or responsiveness to a webpage.I also learnt the box

model which encompasses margins, padding, borders and positioning.

In my third week I delved further into various applications of CSS and also

taught responsiveness as the ability of a website or application to adapt to its

layout ,visual appearance and functionality to different screen sizes ,devices and

orientation,including its principles.

In my fourth week I started JavaScript as a high-level language used for client side

scripting on the web,I learnt variables, data types and operators in JavaScript with

various control structures.

In my fifth week I was introduced to different popular frameworks for front end

development, but the one chosen as case study was vue.js,which is a JavaScript based

framework for front end programming,I installed It using node.js and created a mini

project.
In my sixth week I delved fully into Vue.js as a framework and learnt its various

features and use cases.I also learnt various vue.js directives, while rounding up the

week with a vue.js mini project.

During my seventh week I revisited all my former knowledge from the first batch

of my program ,and continued Vue.js while working on two new projects.Home page

for a travel site and A shoe retail store.

In my eight week I started a new part of web development which was back end

programming, starting from server side programming ,I learnt its key aspects and its

various development frameworks.

During my ninth week I delved into server side programming with node.js starting

with its features and uses .

In my tenth week I started practicing how to build a web server with node.js,I

worked on a simple back end program which was creating an API for a to do list app.

In my eleventh week I learnt relational database and add a brief discourse on

SQL,I installed SQL and created a new data base for practice.

In my final week I learnt database security and also introduced to importance of

encryption and data masking and finally bid my farewell to the company .

CHAPTER FOUR
4.0 CHALLENGES, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
4.1 CHALLENGES
The major challenge i faced was lack of data subscription to work.
4.2 RECOMMENDATION

For subsequent Industrial training which would be undergone by students, I

recommend that;

i. The institutions should organize an orientation programme on SIWES for students

before they are sent on IT. This would help prepare them for the training and also

serve as guide on how to fill logbooks and what is expected of them during the course

of the training.

ii. The duration allotted to Computer student for training be increased to enable

students more time to gain more experience.

iii. Bodies involve in the organization of the scheme should make sure that those

companies that have the means to give student allowance.

iv. I recommend that SIWES programme should be continued, as it helps in the

practical application of most works done in school and it really exposes students to

the norms and ethics of the industrial set-up. Also, the Federal Government should

allocate allowance for the programme which should be paid to the students on

monthly basis during the SIWES period, and the schools should help in securing of

placement for their students.

7
4.2 CONCLUSION

The SIWES programme gave me the opportunity to understand the basics of

web development and as well graduate to a more higher level of knowledge in order

to make me a good web developer in the future. I had access to good instructors and

teachers as well as good resources that helped my learning process.

This training also gave me the opportunity to interact, share knowledge and

ideas with other members of the company which increase my social skills. This

programme will remain an unforgettable experience for me because it has provided

me the avenue to believe that I can actually achieve anything I put my mind to do as

well as helping me bridge the gap between Theoretical knowledge and the Practical

approach to my course of study, making me relevant in the field. During my SIWES

placement, I was able to develop a range of professional skills, including effective

communication, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving. These skills will

be valuable not only in my academic pursuits but also in my future career. I was also

able to gain insight into the workplace culture, organizational structure, and the

importance of following safety and ethical standards.

Overall, I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in the SIWES program and I

believe it has prepared me well for my future career. I look forward to applying the

knowledge and skills I have gained during my placement to my academic and

professional pursuits.
