1. AIMS AND LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

The main objective of this course is to educate the students with different aspects of chemistry experiments. The
students will carry out a set of experiments that will expose the students to experimental methods and to
integrate theoretical knowledge and concept to practical experience. Students will also learn the operation of
some scientific equipment for performing experiments.
2. TEXT BOOK:
Lab Manual for Chemistry Laboratory: Dept. of Chemistry, BITS Pilani
3. REFERENCE BOOK:
Vogel's textbook of quantitative chemical analysis, Prentice Hall, 2000.
4. COURSE PLAN:
The students will perform the following ten experiments with an emphasis on individual planning and execution
of the experiments.
Sl. No. Experiment Name*
1. Estimation of copper(II) by iodometry (Virtual Lab)
2. Kinetics of the iodination of acetone (Virtual Lab)
3. Determination of the concentration equilibrium constant (K c) of the reaction: CH3COOH(aq) +
C2H5OH(aq) ⇄ CH3COOC2H5(aq) + H2O(l) (Virtual Lab)
4. Dissociation constant of a weak electrolyte by Conductometry (Virtual Lab)
5. Determination of the pH curve of an acid-base titration
6. Determination of total hardness of water with EDTA
7. Synthesis and recrystallization of dibenzalacetone
8. Mechanochemical synthesis of a Schiff’s base ligand and its Copper(II) Complex:
a GREEN Chemistry Approach
9. Determination of saponification value of an oil

* The students are expected to follow the following

 Students will join the online laboratory hour as per the timetable following the link to be
provided.
 Detailed video for each experiment will be provided along with the detailed laboratory manual
 In each class, the instructor will discuss about the scheduled experiment in brief, conduct a short
quiz to judge preparedness of student, instruct about the specific task/ activity for each
experiment (different for different experiments).
 Four experiments in the given list, marked as “Virtual Lab” are to be performed by the students
virtually. Instructions about installing and running the required software for the same will be
shared separately.

Marks distribution: Total marks = 200, Each experiment is of 16 marks. Detailed marks distribution for
each of the 9 experiments is provided in the laboratory manual. Score of best 8 experiments will be counted.

5. EVALUATION:

Component (Marks) Weightage % Date and Time

Laboratory Task Report and Quiz (128) 64% Continuous
Comprehensive Examination (72) 36% To be announced

6. IMPORTANT NOTES:
 Students are expected to read the experiments from the lab-manual and watch the video prior to joining
the Lab session (via electronic platform).
 Students must submit the completed laboratory task report, specific for each experiment, before the
end of the next lab-class via email including all the necessary and sufficient details to the instructor.
7. MAKE-UP: Make-up in online laboratory course being less feasible, one buffer has been arranged so as to
take care of any genuine cases.
8. NOTICE: Notices concerning this course will be displayed in Nalanda.
