University of Portland Intramural Sports
Co-Rec 4x4 Basketball Rules
(All games shall be governed by current National High
School Federation rules apart from U.P. Intramural Sports
adaptations.)
1. Eligibility
a. Current University of Portland students, faculty and staff in good standing with the
University and Recreational Services are eligible to participate in intramural
sports. Bon Appetit employees who are not students at the University are not
eligible to participate.
b. Onlycurrent U.P. students, faculty and staff who are listed on the team roster and
sign the player liability release and medical authorization are eligible.
c. Team captains and players are responsible for
checking eligibility status.
d. New players to the team must be added to the roster
before playing. Additional players may be added to
the roster and score sheet as they arrive (during a
dead ball).
e. Players can only play in one skill category. Players
cannot participate in both Divisions. This rule applies
to both men and women.
f. Division 1 athletes in basketball are not eligible to
participate until one year has passed since the last
participation in practices or games, whichever
happened most recently.
g. Club basketball players are not eligible for D2. The
maximum number of club players on a D1 team is 2
(1 man and 1 woman) per team.
h. Playoff Eligibility: A player must be on the roster and
have played in at least one regular season game. A
player who could not play due to injury, must have
been on the roster for at least one regular season
game. Players may not be added once a playoff
tournament begins.
i. Protests are not allowed, except those related to
player eligibility.
2. Forfeits
a. Forfeit time is game time. If a team has enough
players and is willing to wait for the team to field
enough players, they can wait a maximum of five
minutes.
b. In order to claim a forfeit, a team must have the
correct number of players present and ready to play.
c. If neither team is able to field a team, a double forfeit
will be declared.
d. The team that forfeited will receive a 3 as their SOG
rating. Any teams that notify the Intramural Office at
least 24 hours ahead of time regarding the forfeit will
be given an SOG rating of a 4.
e. A second forfeit within the same sport will result in
that team being dropped from league play.
3. Equipment
a. The Intramural Sports staff will provide a game ball
for each match. Player-provided balls may be used if
approved by game officials and both teams.
b. Games will be played in the Beauchamp Center.
c. Pinnies will be provided to teams at the game site.
4. Play
a. Opening Possession to start the game is determined
by Rock, Paper, Scissors. Alternating possessions
will be awarded in all other jump ball situations and to
start the second half. The first possession in overtime
play will also be decided by rock, paper, scissors.
b. Games are two 20-minute halves (running clock).
c. Stoppage: Prior to the last 2 minutes of a game, the
clock will stop for time-outs (team and official) and
injuries. During the last 2 minutes of the second half,
the clock will stop on all dead balls unless one team
is leading by twenty or more points. If a team is
leading by 20+ points, then the clock will only stop
during the last two minutes of the second half for
injuries and timeouts.
d. Half Time: A 5-minute break will separate each half.
e. Regular Season Overtime: In the event of a tie at the
end of regulation play, an Overtime Period of two
minutes will be played. If the game is still tied, a
sudden death period will be played where the first
team to score two points wins the game.
f. Playoff Overtime: During playoffs a series of two-
minute periods will be played until a winner is
determined. During the last minute of any overtime
period, the clock will stop on all whistles.
g. Time-Outs: Each team receives three 30-second
time-outs per game. Time-outs carry into overtime.
No additional timeouts will be awarded for overtime
periods.
5. Co-Rec Rules
a. No zone defense is allowed.
b. Two men and two women are on the floor for each
team. A game may not start with less than 3 legal
players (1 male and 2 females or 1 female and 2
males).
c. A player cannot steal the ball from a player of the
opposite gender (EX: male steals from female,
female steals from male.
d. If a player steals the ball from a player of the opposite
gender, the opponents will be given one warning per
team. Thereafter, a personal foul will be assessed.
e. A man cannot jump to block a female’s shot. If he
stays with both feet on the ground, he is allowed to
contest the shot.
f. If a team gains possession in their backcourt, both
genders must touch the ball in the front court before a
shot may be attempted. If a team violates this rule,
their opponent receives the ball, and any points
scored do not count. 
g. On a missed shot attempted by either sex, the
rebound can be put back up by any player on the
court regardless of gender.
h. When a team takes out the ball after a point has been
scored, they have 10 seconds to get it past half court
6. Scoring
a. Normal scoring applies for shots, 3 points behind the
3-point arc, 2 for shots inside the arc, and 1 for free
throws.
7. Substitutions
a) Substitutions shall be made only when the ball is
dead (any whistle). Substitutes MUST check in at the
scorer’s table and be waived in by an official before
entering.
b) No substitutes will be allowed for a shooter in free
throw situations, unless the player is injured and
unable to continue.
c) NOTE: Excessive substitutions in an attempt to kill the
clock will result in a warning, followed by a technical
foul if the team continues to violate the rule.
8. Fouls
a) Prior to bonus
a. A player who is fouled in the act of shooting and
misses a 2-point attempt will receive two shots,
and three shots if attempting a 3-pointer.
b. A player who makes the shot and is fouled will
get one free throw.
c. Non-Shooting fouls
i. Team receives the ball out of bounds
b) Bonus (Opponent has committed 7-9 team fouls)
i. Team will receive one & one bonus on non-
shooting fouls.
c) Double Bonus (Opponent has committed 10+ team
fouls)
i. Team will receive two shots on non-shooting
fouls.
9. Technical Fouls
a) Penalty- Team receives two free throws and the ball
at half-court
b) Technical fouls are counted as team fouls.
c) Two unsportsmanlike technical fouls on the same
player in a game will result in automatic ejection.
d) THREE UNSPORTSMANLIKE TECHNICAL FOULS
ON THE SAME TEAM WILL RESULT IN THE GAME
BEING FORFEITED BY THAT TEAM.
e) Two types, unsportsmanlike and rule violation:
a. Unsportsmanlike- A foul which involves
unsportsmanlike behavior of any sort, including
profanity, obscene gestures, abusive and/or
obscene language, disrespectful behavior
towards officials, players, spectators, Intramural
Sports Staff.
b. A player who receives an unsportsmanlike
technical foul must be substituted for and remain
out of the game until the next dead ball. If the
team does not have any substitutions, they must
play short-handed. If the team is already playing
with three players, the player may stay in the
game.
c. Rule Violation- Such as playing with jewelry,
illegal substitution, hanging on rim, etc
10. Intentional Fouls
a. An intentional foul is one which “does not appear to
be legitimate attempt to play the ball.” This has been
expanded to include a player causing “excessive
contact” (hard foul) while playing the ball.
i. Penalty: Team receives two points and the ball at
half court.
b. Intentional fouls are counted as personal fouls as well
as team fouls.
c. Deciding whether a foul is an Intentional foul will be
up to the discretion of the Officials.
11. Flagrant Fouls
a) Penalty- Team receives two points and the ball at the
spot of the foul and the player is ejected.
b) A dangerous foul with no regard to the safety of the
player being fouled and no attempt to play the ball.
12. Player and Captain Conduct, Spirit of the Game
a. Team captains are responsible for the conduct of their
players and fans.
b. Only the captain is allowed to discuss calls with the
official during play.
c. Teams will be rated by the official on their “Spirit of
the Game.” Teams which are friendly towards the
official and players and who play within the spirit of
the game will receive a high score. Those who are
not will receive a low score. Teams need at least a
4.5 average score on a scale of 8, to qualify for the
playoffs.
d. Any individual receiving two unsportsmanlike conduct
fines is immediately suspended from competition
pending a meeting with the Recreational Services
Director. Any team with two or more fines may also
be suspended.
13. Additional Policies
a. Players should only be listed on the game score
sheet if they have played.
b. All fans must remain well out of bounds.
c. Players may begin to warm up after the preceding
game is finished.
d. No food or beverages are allowed on the gym floor.
14. Insurance
a. The Recreational Services Office does not provide
insurance and assumes no responsibility for
accidents or injuries occurring before, during, or after
Intramural Sports competition.
