Design Examples on Design

of RC One-way solid slab

12/8/2024 BY:GEBI.B (MSc. In structural Engineering ) 1

Example
Example: Continuous One-way solid slab

The Figure below shows a clear area of 12𝑚 𝑥 8.5𝑚

for a hall construction in a school. The slab is
supported on beams of size 225 𝑥 500 𝑚𝑚 spaced at
4.0𝑚 center-to-center. The slab has to carry a
distributed permanent action (i.e. actions from floor
finishing and partition walls) and a variable action
of 3.0𝑘𝑁/𝑚2 .

Example
Assume a design life of 50 years and exposure class =
𝑋𝐶1 .The materials to be used are grade 𝐶25/
30 concrete and 𝑆 − 500 steel grade. Use 𝜙12𝑚𝑚 bars
and 30𝑚𝑚 cement screed, 20𝑚𝑚 PVC covering and
20𝑚𝑚 ceiling plaster as floor finishing for all slabs.
Design the slab and check its serviceability limit
state.

Example
Solution

Step 1: Check whether the slab is treated as one way or two way

𝐿𝑦 8.5

𝐿𝑥 4

Step 2: Determine thickness of the slab from deflection requirement

𝐵𝑎𝑠𝑖𝑐 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑛/𝑒𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑝𝑡ℎ for reinforced concrete

members without axial compression.

way solid slabs)

Modification factors

Modification may be needed for the stress level in the

reinforcement and span length greater than 7m.

12/8/2024 Design of RC One-way solid slab 12

Example
The span of the given slab 𝐿𝑥 = 4.0𝑚 is less than 7m.
Therefore modification is not needed for the span of
the slab.

Example
Step 3: Determine the design load

Self-weight of slab = 𝐷 ∗ 𝛾𝑐 = 0.2𝑚 ∗ 25 𝑘𝑁ൗ𝑚3

= 5.0 𝑘𝑁ൗ𝑚2
12/8/2024 Design of RC One-way solid slab 15
Example
Dead load on the slab from floor finishing

= 0.02𝑚 ∗ 16 𝑘𝑁ൗ 3 + 0.03𝑚 ∗ 23 𝑘𝑁ൗ 3 + 0.02𝑚

𝑚 𝑚

∗ 16 𝑘𝑁ൗ 3 = 1.33 𝑘𝑁ൗ 2

𝑚 𝑚
Total dead load 𝑔𝑘 = 5.0 + 1.33 = 6.33 𝑘𝑁ൗ𝑚2

Live load 𝑞𝑘 = 3 𝑘𝑁ൗ𝑚2

Design load 𝑤 = 1.35𝑔𝑘 + 1.5𝑞𝑘

= 1.35 ∗ 6.33 + 1.5 ∗ 3 = 13.05 𝑘𝑁ൗ𝑚2

12/8/2024 Design of RC One-way solid slab 16
Example
Step 4: Loading analysis

One-way slab may be considered as a wide shallow beam

spanning between slab supports and the analysis is then
carried out by assuming a beam of unit strip width with a
depth equal to the thickness of the slab and span equal to
the distance between supports (in the short direction).
∴Load per unit area on the slab would be the load per unit length on
this imaginary beam of unit strip width.

Reinforcement @ End supports (𝑴𝒅 = 𝟐𝟓%
adjacent span moment)

Because of a monolithic construction of the slab and

beam, the support conditions between the slab and
beam is partially fixed. Therefore, to resist any
negative moment at the end supports, top steel should
be provided.

12/8/2024 Design of RC One-way solid slab 34

▪ As per ES EN 1992-1-1:2015 section 9.3.1.2(2), where
partial fixity occurs along an edge of a slab but is not
taken into account in the analysis, the top
reinforcement should be capable of resisting at least
𝟐𝟓% of the maximum moment in the adjacent span.

▪ The moment to be designed for a minimum 25% of the

adjacent span moment = 0.25 ∗ 16.27 = 4.1𝑘𝑁𝑚/𝑚.

Control of cracking without direct calculation as per
ES EN 1992-1-1:2015 section 7.3.3

For reinforced slabs in buildings subjected to bending

without significant axial tension specific measures to
control cracking are not necessary where the overall
depth does not exceed 200 mm by restricting the bar
diameter or spacing as a simplification.
