INTRODUCTION TO THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE HUMAN PERSON MODULE

I. Introduction

This module will discuss the essence of life in order for students to value its worth
for themselves and their humanness. This last chapter underscored the human person
in society particularly the evolution of technology. From simple agricultural life of the
early society to the most complex and diverse impact of globalization, the present era.

II. Topic

THE HUMAN PERSON AS A BEING UNTO DEATH

III. Objectives:

a. recognize the meaning of his/her own life;

b. enumerate the objectives s/he wants to achieve and to define the projects s/he
really wants to do in his/her life;
c. explain the meaning of life; and reflect the meaning of his/her own life; and
d. reflect the meaning of his/her own life.

IV. Discussion

What is death?
Death is a thought of an event where we are no longer possible to physically exist. It is a point where all
of our potentialities shall have been completed. Death is an own-most possibility, and it is the fulfillment of
man’s being, the completion of his life.

The irreversible cessation of all vital functions especially as indicated by permanent stoppage of the
heart, respiration, and the brain activity; the end of life or brain death.

1. Hinduism defines the meaning of life follows the law of karma. When you die, your soul will be reincarnated
into a different form; depending on what you did in your previous life.

2. Materialists would say that there is no meaning to what we are doing apart from what are doing now. When
we die, our body will one day disintegrate into thin air.

It is the separation of the soul from our physical body permanently.

Elisabeth Kubler-Ross’ Stages of dying (1997)

1. Denial and isolation
2. Anger or resentment
3. Bargaining or negotiation
4. Depression
5. Acceptance or resignation

Human person denies human death

Death is one of the permanent facts of human life. According to Arthur Schopenhauer, there is no reason
to be afraid of death. Because it is actually the ultimate aim and purpose of life. Life is a constant process of
dying. When we let go of everything we possess, it is dying.

Human person’s immortality system

Immortality systems are on rational belief structures that give us a way we believe we are immortals.
1. Immortality through culture
Senior High School Department S.Y. 2024 – 2025 1
2. Immortality through arts
3. Immortality through religion
4. Immortality through wealth
5. Immortality through relations
6. Immortality through heroism
7. Cheating death Through science and technology
a. Human cloning – creating a genetically same copy of an existing human person
b. Cryogenics – low temperature preservation of humans and animals who can no longer be
sustained by contemporary medicine, with the hope that healing and resurrection may be possible in
the future
c. Trans-humanism – an intellectual, international and cultural movement supporting the use of
science and technology to improve human mental and physical characteristics and capabilities.

Knowledge of one’s death inescapability allows us to establish priorities and structure our time
accordingly. As we age, these priorities and structuring alter in recognition of diminishing time.
