ICT623 Data Visualization
Assessment 3 – Individual Assignment Overview (30%: 20% Report and
10% (5min) for Question and Answer)
The aim of this assessment is to provide students with an opportunity to
demonstrate their ability to demonstrate their understanding of data visualization
principles, including selecting appropriate chart types, applying design principles,
purposeful use of color, and effectively visualizing variability in data.
Part 1: Data Selection (5 marks)
Choose a dataset that will be used for the assignment. Make sure the dataset has
sufficient complexity and variability to allow for meaningful visualization. The
chosen dataset should contains at least 100 data points. The datasets can be
sourced from reputable data repositories, such as Kaggle, UCI Machine Learning
Repository, or other sources. (3)
Explain what story or insights you want to convey with the chosen dataset.(2)
Part 2: Data Visualization (13 marks)
Chart Type Selection:
Select three different types of charts for your data visualization. Justify your
choice based on the characteristics of the data and your objectives. (4 marks)
Advanced Visualization Techniques:
Create three advanced visualizations that effectively represent different
aspects of the data. These should go beyond simple bar or line charts and
could include techniques such as heat maps, scatter plot, box plot, etc. Ensure
that your visualizations adhere to best practices in design, such as labelling,
scaling, and clarity. (6 marks)

Use of Color:
Use color purposefully to enhance visualizations and communicate key
points. (1mark)
Analysis:
Describe any patterns, trends, or outliers you have identified. Provide a critical
analysis of the effectiveness of your visualizations in conveying the intended
message. (2 marks)
** All reports must include references which must be done using APA reference
style. (2 mark)
This unit requires students to use APA system of referencing. See Sydney
International’s quick reference guide. It should be used in conjunction with the
online tool Academic Writer: https://extras.apa.org/apastyle/basics-7e/#/.
-Include the DOI or URL for all the references to provide a complete and accessible
reference. If a DOI is available, it should always be used in references. If no, a URL
or other access information should be included.
- Include proper in-text citations for all the sources you reference in your
assignment. (1 mark)
Timelines and Expectations:
Individual Submission
Report: 20% , Question and answer: 10%
Due (12th of January, 11:59pm), Expected word count 2000 words. Students are
expected to submit their assessments via Turnitin on Moodle.
