Introduction
Virtual Storage Access Method (VSAM)
refers to both type of the dataset and
the access methods that are used to
manage various dataset types.
The access method makes an I/O
operation(moving data between an I/O
device and memory) easier for an
application.
VSAM is a type of record-oriented
system and an IBM invented access
method that allows us to access and
organize records in the dataset.
Audiences & Objective
The tutorial is for anyone who can be a
student, a fresher trying to learn VSAM, or
a software engineer, a mainframe
developer, an expert trying to improve their
expertise on VSAM.
Prerequisites
Reader having the knowledge on below can
understand the VSAM topics easily -
ISPF
JCL
IDCAMS
COBOL
If the readers do not have knowledge of
the above, we have got covered those
tutorials as well for you. Go through them
and have some basic understanding before
proceeding with VSAM.
Having a mainframe id handy helps to
practice the concepts immediately.
However, mainframe id is not mandatory to
learn the VSAM and we have covered all
concepts with full of examples.
What you learn?
We have covered the below topics with in-
depth information that includes examples
with detail explanation -
– VSAM Tutorial
– File Access Methods
– Introduction
– VSAM vs Non-VSAM
– VSAM vs DB2
– Basic Concepts and Terminology
– Components
– Catalog
– Utility to Create VSAM
– ESDS
– KSDS
– RRDS
– LDS
– Dataset Types Comparison
– Selecting VSAM Dataset Type
