Because of the rise of short videos in social media services like TikTok,
content consumption evolved, especially among students. These platforms
offer trendy content that is understandable and quickly grabs attention.
However, there are concerns about how long-term exposure to these videos
on apps like Tiktok may affect kids' attention spans and academic
performance. Regular exposure to short videos may teach change the
children’s brains to seek immediate gratification, which makes it difficult to
concentrate on longer, more difficult tasks like learning. (Kazi, 2024).
Researches found that short videos affect the students’ performance in
school negatively. A study even discovered that the constant exposure to
rapidly changing content may affect negatively to students and lead to
burnouts and a decline of interest in studying. It may also reduce the
students’ capacity to retain information during classroom activities or
independent study.
Given the widespread use of TikTok, it is crucial to understand its
effects on students’ cognitive abilities especially on their attention span and
prevent negative effects. Teachers, parents, and students themselves must
be aware of the risks associated with the excessive use of Tiktok. The
researchers’ goal is to understand TikTok and how its usage impacts the well
being of students. Thus, the researchers, through their study, hopes to
encourage a responsible use of Tiktok as an app and promote digital well-
being.
