Describes Characteristics,
Strengths, Weaknesses, and Kinds
of Qualitative Research
CHARACTERISTICS OF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
1.HUMAN UNDERSTANDING & INTERPRETATION
Data analysis results show an individual’s mental, social, and spiritual
understanding of the world. Hence, through their worldviews, you come to know
what kind of human being he or she is, including his or her values, beliefs, likes and
dislikes.
2. ACTIVE, POWERFUL, & FORCEFUL
A lot of changes occur continuously in every stage of a qualitative research. As
you go through the research process, you find the need to amend or rephrase
interview questions and consider varied ways of getting answers, like shifting from
mere speculating to traveling to places for data gathering. You are not fixated to
a certain plan. Rather, you are inclined to discover your qualitative research design
as your study gradually unfolds or reveals itself in accordance with your research
objectives.
3. MULTIPLE RESEARCH APPROACHES & METHODS
Qualitative research allows you to approach or plan your study in varied ways. You
are free to combine this with quantitative research and use all gathered data and
analysis techniques. Being a multi-method research, a qualitative study applies to
all research types, descriptive, exploratory, explanatory, case study, and so on.
4. SPECIFICITY TO GENERALIZATION
Specific ideas in a qualitative research are directed to a general understanding of
something. It follows an inductive or scientific method of thinking where you start
Dr. Rodelio M. Alba PRACTICAL RESEARCH 1 2
Author Learning Module #2
Learning Module in Practical Research 1
thinking of particular or specific concept that will eventually lead you to more
complex ideas such as generalizations or conclusion.
5. CONTEXTUALIZATION
A quantitative research involves all variables, factors, or conditions affecting the
study. Your goal here is to understand human behavior. Thus, it is crucial for you
to examine the context or situation of an individual’s life – the who, what, why,
how, and other circumstances – affecting his or her way of life.
6. DIVERSIFIED DATA IN REAL-LIFE SITUATIONS
A qualitative researcher prefers collecting data in a natural setting like observing
people as they live and work, analyzing photographs or videos as they genuinely
appear to people, and looking at classroom unchanged or adjusted to people’s
intentional observations.
7. ABOUNDS WITH WORDS AND VISUALS
Words. Words, and more words come in big quantities in this kind of research.
Data gathering through interviews or library reading, as well as the presentation
data analysis results, is done verbally. In some cases, it resorts to quoting some
respondents’ answers. Likewise, presenting people’s worldviews through visual
presentation, e.g., pictures, videos, drawings, and graphs, are significantly used in
a qualitative research.
8. INTERNAL ANALYSIS
Here, you examine the data yielded by the internal traits of the subject
individuals like their emotional, mental, and spiritual characteristics. You study
people’s perception or views about your topic and not the effects of their physical
existence on your study. In case of objects, e.g., books and artworks, that are
subjected to a qualitative research, the investigation centers on underlying
theories or principles that govern these materials and their usefulness to people.
Baraceros, 2019
ADVANTAGES OF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
- It adopts a naturalistic approach to its subject matter which means that the participants
are involved in real settings.
- It promotes a full understanding of human behavior or personality traits in their natural
setting.
- It is instrumental for positive societal changes.
- It engenders respect for people’s individuality as it demands the researcher’s careful
and attentive stand toward people’s worldviews.
- It is a way of understanding and interpreting social interactions.
- It increases the researcher’s interest in the study as it includes the researcher’s
experience or background knowledge in interpreting verbal and visual data.
- It offers multiple ways of acquiring and examining knowledge about something.

DISADVANTAGES OF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
- It involves a lot or researcher’s subjectivity in data analysis.
- It is hard to know the validity or reliability of the data.
- Its open-ended questions yield “data overload” that requires long-time analysis.
- It is time-consuming.
- It involves several processes which results greatly depend on the research’s views or
interpretations.
Baraceros, 2019
TYPES OF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
1. Case Study
It normally occurs from rehabilitation centers, nursing, social care, psychology,
and education. It involves a long-term study of a person, group, organization or situation.
Try to answer the question as to why this thing happens to the subject. Looking for a reason
in an event makes you get involved in the relationship of people who are related to the
case under study. Data Collections such as interview, questionnaire, observation and
analysis are used.
2. Ethnography
Part of Anthropology and comes from two Greek words, "Ethnos" – people, folk,
or nation; and "Grapho," which means writing. It is a study of a specific cultural group in
order to gain a clear understanding of its organizational structure, internal operations,
culture and lifestyle.
It also observes people's lifestyle in a natural or normal setting. Researchers spend
their time living, immersing and experiencing community life.
Today, the field of marketing has shown an interest in carrying out ethnographic
studies such as feasibility studies. The sample theme of ethnographic studies is as follows:
a. The Feasibility of Hybrid Cars Among Middle Income Earners
b. The Preferred Vaccine Company of the Filipinos
3. Phenomenology
From the word "phenomenon," which means something known by sensory
experience. It refers to the study of how people find their experience meaningful. The
primary goal is to make people understand their experiences of the death of loved ones,
the care of the disabled, and the friendliness of people.

4. Content and Discourse Analysis
a. Historical Analysis
The analysis of different data sources in order to clarify the relationship between
past events and the present time is essential to this qualitative research approach. You can
draw conclusions, make predictions and identify phenomenological modifications in the
unmodified sectors of society from the findings of your study.
b. Grounded Theory
This theory generally occurs when you introduce a new theory that claims to
support the study of data collection and analysis at the same time. You will discover the
applicable theory of the situation that will be examined by studying the subjects of the
research. The methods of data collection for this form of study are interview, observation
and documentary analysis. Grounded Theory is considered to be a general approach, since
it applies to both qualitative and quantitative studies.
Illustrates the Importance of
Qualitative Research
Across Fields
Humanities and Social Sciences
It attributes to their experience through analysis and interpretation of the products of that
experience, be they conceptual, cultural, or physical artifacts.
Politics
Qualitative interviews help us answer the how and why questions that must be addressed in order
to advance our understanding of political parties' use of new communication technologies and their
campaign work.
Marketing/Business
Qualitative research provides valuable data for use in the design of a product—including data about
user needs, behavior patterns, and use cases
Medical & Healthcare
Qualitative findings informs & understands the patients' experiences, improving his or her ability to
develop specific, tailored interventions, particularly in the patient and nursing spheres, that will
improve patient outcomes.
Engineering
Engineering design is very often informed by user requirements or by user specifications, and
qualitative research methods are employed to ascertain these prior to design and also to evaluate
the product from the user's perspective post-production.
Education
How do you measure motivation? Persuasiveness? These qualities are difficult to measure, but it
would be so helpful to understand what it is in a teacher or in a teacher’s presentation of a lesson
which motivates students to perform better. How does a teacher’s persuasiveness impact student
performance?
