1. Introduction of the Event

The Heritage Club, School of Architecture and Design, organized a creative event titled
"Heritage Week - Fragments of History" in collaboration with Somany tiles from 14th
November 2024 to 20th November 2024 with the timings 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., where
participants created craft mosaic art using broken tile pieces on pre-stenciled boards of
historic buildings. This event is free of cost for every student and aims to inspire artistic
expression while promoting a deeper appreciation for architectural heritage through hands-on
engagement and collaborative creativity. This workshop encouraged participants to explore
the beauty of heritage and iconic monuments through the medium of abstract art, created with
broken tiles. The event aimed to provide an experiential platform for participants to reimagine
historical landmarks in an entirely new way, fostering a sense of creativity and connection
with the past.

2. Objective of the Event

 Unleashing Creativity: Give students a chance to explore their artistic side by creating
beautiful mosaics, combining abstract designs and iconic monuments.
 Connecting with Heritage: Help participants appreciate and understand the value of our
cultural heritage by reimagining famous landmarks through art.
 Building Teamwork: Encourage students from different backgrounds to work together,
share ideas, and create something amazing as a team.
 Promoting Sustainability: Show how broken tiles can be transformed into meaningful
artwork, spreading the message of reusing materials and being eco-friendly.
 Learning New Skills: Teach participants hands-on skills like mosaic making, design
planning, and creative problem-solving.
 Expressing Ideas: Create a space for students to share their thoughts, innovate, and
express themselves through art.
 Celebrating Art and History: Blend history and creativity by turning heritage into art,
making it fun and inspiring for everyone.

3. Beneficiaries of the Event

The beneficiaries of the event included students from first-year and second-year across
various departments.
Faculty members Ar. Neha Saxena, Ar. Siddharth Mishra provided guidance, enriching the
students' learning experience.

4. Brief Description of the event

The "Fragments of History" event, organized by the Heritage Club , School of Architecture
and Design in collaboration with Somany tiles brought together students from diverse
departments to explore their creativity through mosaic tile art. Participants had the
opportunity to create two distinct types of artworks: abstract designs and reimagined
representations of historical monuments. Using broken tiles as their medium, students
experimented with colours, patterns, and arrangements to craft abstract pieces that reflected
their unique artistic expressions.

Simultaneously, they collaborated on creating mosaic interpretations of iconic monuments,
blending creativity with cultural appreciation. This dual focus allowed participants to explore
both freeform artistry and the structural essence of heritage sites. The event provided a
platform for students to learn mosaic techniques, engage in teamwork, and connect with
history in an innovative way, culminating in a vibrant showcase of their efforts

The event not only showcased the students' artistic talents but also deepened their
appreciation for historical landmarks. The collaborative efforts between 1st and 2nd-year
students from different departments added to the richness of the experience, highlighting the
importance of teamwork and shared learning.

7. Schedule of the event

14th November - The "Fragments of History" event, organized by the Heritage Club, took
place at the Construction Yard and brought together a dynamic group of students from 1st and
2nd years across various departments. The event began at 3 PM with participants receiving
raw Somani tiles, which they shattered into smaller pieces to prepare materials for their
abstract creations. Following this, the group engaged in lively ice-breaking activities, where
students shared their preferences and ideas about innovation and creativity, fostering a
collaborative and open atmosphere. Participants were then divided into groups and tasked
with organizing the shattered tiles by color, allowing each group to conceptualize and decide
on their approach to reimagining iconic monuments. Discussions about color schemes and
creative concepts flowed freely as the teams brainstormed unique artistic interpretations. By 5
PM, the event concluded, leaving participants inspired and energized by their shared
experience
15th November - Participants gathered at the event venue by 3:00. A brief introduction to the
day's activities and objectives was provided. Skilled masons were present to cut tiles into
smaller pieces as per the requirements of the participants’ designs.
Students observed the cutting process to ensure the tile fragments matched their envisioned
designs. Participants selected their base boards for their mosaic creations.
They checked the suitability of the cut tiles against their chosen designs and made
adjustments as needed. Using tools provided, students refined the shapes and sizes of tiles to
better suit their designs.
Teams finalized their layouts, ensuring their boards and tile pieces aligned with the artistic
concepts they planned to create. Participants organized their materials and reviewed their
progress.
Instructions for the next session were shared, focusing on assembly and creating the mosaics.
16th November - Participants assembled at the venue at 4:00. A quick recap of the previous
day’s progress was provided, along with a briefing on the day’s goals: finalizing designs and
progressing with the mosaic work. Teams reviewed and finalized their designs for both the
abstract art pieces and historical monument recreations. Participants started working on their
mosaic boards, carefully placing the tiles. Teams collaborated to arrange the tiles precisely,
focusing on colour schemes, patterns, and alignment. Guidance was provided by coordinators
and mentors to enhance the quality
17th November - Teams organized their tiles and ensured their designs were ready for the
sticking process. Materials like adhesive, tools, were distributed and a quick demonstration on
the proper use of adhesive was given by the facilitators. Participants began sticking the tiles
onto their boards according to their finalized designs. Team members collaborated to apply
adhesive evenly, placing tiles carefully to maintain the integrity of their designs. Coordinators
provided feedback and assisted with any challenges faced during the process. Teams cleaned
their workspaces, ensuring the boards were set aside safely to allow the adhesive to dry.
18th November - Participants resumed adhering any remaining tiles to their boards, ensuring
all pieces were firmly fixed. Attention was given to completing intricate details and aligning
the tiles perfectly to preserve the design's consistency and aesthetics. Teams inspected their
mosaic boards, filling gaps and making minor adjustments. Coordinators assisted participants
in troubleshooting issues like uneven placement or adhesive application. Each group
conducted a thorough quality check, verifying that all tiles were securely fixed and designs
were accurate. Teams were briefed on the next phase: grouting the tiles, which would add the
finishing touch to their mosaics.

19th November - A demonstration on the grouting process was provided, explaining
techniques for applying grout evenly and cleaning excess material for a polished finish.
Teams began applying grout to their mosaics under the guidance of the core team.
Participants carefully filled the spaces between the tiles, ensuring all gaps were properly
sealed. After the grout was applied, participants used sponges and cloths to gently clean the
tile surfaces, removing excess grout. Core team members assisted in checking each mosaic for
consistency in grouting and advised participants on corrections where necessary.
20th November - Participants and team members reviewed the grouting progress from the
previous day, ensuring everything was on track. Teams completed any unfinished grouting
tasks and refined areas that required additional attention. Final adjustments were made to
ensure the grout was evenly distributed and well-set across all designs. Participants polished
the tile surfaces, ensuring they were clean and the colours of the mosaic were vivid and clear.
Any remaining grout residue was carefully removed, leaving the tiles smooth. Teams safely
stored their mosaics to allow for complete drying and preparation for the final exhibition.
