STRUCTURED LEARNING EXPERIENCE
Topic: LANGUAGE IN CONTEXT
OBJECTIVES
a. To value collaboration while actively executing tasks regarding language in context.
b. To practice and develop various cognitive abilities through language-related activities.
c. To help learners comprehend language in context and how language influences thought.
PROCEDURES
Icebreaker: Sleeps (Slips) of the Tongue
Steps:
1. Students will sit in a semi-circle with their predetermined groups.
2. Gibberish will be presented on each slide. The task of the learners is to determine what the
true statement is. (Ex: Good eye might! = Good day, mate!)
3. All members of a group shall raise their hand to answer. Whichever group raises their hands
first gets to answer.
4. The group with the most correct answers will earn an additional 5 points for their final score.
Part 1: Intensity Estimation Game
Steps:
1. Students will sit in a circle with their predetermined groups. Two groups are assigned to
Tagalog and two to Bisaya.
2. Each group will be given answer sheets with 5 sets of 3 words in their group’s assigned
language.
3. Each group shall estimate the intensity of each word in each set and assign a score from 1
(lowest) to 3 (highest). The intensity estimation shall be based on the emotional impact (e.g.,
annoyance - anger - rage).
4. Every word that matches the predetermined intensity level earns the group 1 point.
5. The total points will be tallied for each group based on the number of correct answers.
Part 2: Draw at Command
Steps:
1. The groups with the same assigned language will merge for this activity.
2. There will be 3 rounds. For each 5-minute round, each group must pick 1 representative.
3. The representative will go to the front while the rest of the members make a straight line
along one side of the room, beside an armchair with paper.
4. A drawing will be shown to the representatives. They shall memorize it within 30 seconds.
5. The representatives will return to their groups and stand beside their group’s armchair. Their
task is to verbally instruct their groupmates how to draw the drawing shown to them.
a. They cannot give any hint as to what the object is.
b. They shall put their arms behind their back to avoid making gestures.
6. Each member shall sit on the chair when it’s their turn to draw. They can only draw one
element at a time (as will be instructed by their representative) and will go to the back of
their line immediately after.
a. No erasures or corrections are allowed.
b. Members can draw again as long as the line restarts.
7. The representatives shall raise their hand when their drawing is finished. If both groups finish
before the 5 minutes are up, proceed to the next round.
8. The accuracy of the drawing will be the basis for points. The group with the more accurate
drawing will receive 5 points while the other will get 3 points.
Part 3. Vocabulary Memory
Steps:
1. Students will sit in a circle with their original groups.
2. Facilitators will give each group a paper filled with Tagalog and Bisaya words that the
participants shall memorize within 2 minutes.
3. After the timer ends, the facilitators will retrieve the papers and distribute pieces of paper to
each student.
4. Each student shall write down every word they can remember within 3 minutes. No erasures
are allowed.
5. Each correctly recalled word, regardless of the language, will earn the group a point.
*General Rule: The groups can only speak in their assigned language. Each word said in another
language deducts 2 points from the group’s overall score.
