Science Term 3 Unit 5 Notes

The document provides notes on light, describing it as a form of energy with natural (e.g., sun, stars) and artificial (e.g., lamps, candles) sources. It categorizes light into four types based on usefulness: utilitarian, decorative, warning, and informative, and explains the nature of darkness and shadows. Additionally, it discusses the apparent movement of the sun and how shadows change in size and shape depending on the time of day and the object's position relative to the light source.

TERM 3 - SCIENCE UNIT TEST 1 NOTES

LIGHT
Light is a form of energy that makes things visible. Anything that help
us to see in the dark is a light source. There are two main sources of
light.
 Natural light source: These are light made by God. Examples;
sun, stars, glow worm, firefly and angler fish. (Moon is not a light
source but reflects light from sun)

 Artificial light source: Light made by man are artificial source

of light. Examples; Torchlight, lamp, bulb, fireworks, candle,
fairy light, traffic light and more.
Types Of Light
There are four types of light base on their usefulness. These are;
 Utilitarian/ useful light- Used mainly to work. Eg; torch for

miners, head lamp

 Decorative lights- Used mainly for decorations. Eg; Fairy light,

led light, firework,

 Warning lights- Used mainly for warning people. Eg; Traffic

light
 Informative light- Used mainly to give information. Eg; bulb,

lantern, lamp, etc

Darkness

Darkness is the absence of light. This means there is no light. In the

dark it is hard to see dark coloured object but shiny objects like coins
silver and light-coloured objects like white plate is seen.
People who work at night usually use useful lights like torchlight and

reflective jackets to be easily seen.

Describing the apparent movement of the Sun.
The earth’s main source of light is the sun and it is the closest star
to the earth.
It appears to move when the earth spins. At day break, the sun
appears(sunrise) in the east and gradually disappears(sunset) in
west. It moves in an arc-like shape from one side of the horizon to the other

over the course of the day.

SHADOW

Shadow is simply the dark image formed when an opaque object

blocks a source of light.

Shadow can sometimes be misleading because shadows do not give

detail of the object.

Facts about shadows

a. A shadow is always dark.

b. A shadow has the same shape as its object.
c. A shadow is formed when an object blocks light.
d. A shadow has no details

Changing shadows

Shadows are longer during early morning and late afternoon.

Shadows are shorter at midday. This happens because of the
apparent movement of the sun. Shadows are formed at the opposite
of where the light is blocked. Shadow gets longer when the light is
blocked at the left and right but becomes shorter when it blocks

the light in the middle.

Shadows grow bigger as the object moves closer to the light source
and become smaller as the object moves farther.
