CHAPTER-7
MONITORING AND CONTROL SYSTEMS
Exercises
1) A geography teacher wants to use a computer to monitor the weather conditions using
the school weather station.
A) Name three sensors in the weather station.
-light sensor
-air pressure sensor
-water sensor
B) Explain why computers are unable to read the data directly from the sensors.
Computers are unable to read the data directly from the sensors because sensors are
analogue data or real world data however computers are digital and so only understand
1 and 0.
C) What device is needed to enable the computer to red the data?
a ADC (analogue to digital converter)
2) A school uses a computer controlled greenhouse to grow plants.
Name three sensors that would be used in the greenhouse
-water sensor
-heat sensor
-oxygen sensor
3) Explain why analogue to digital conversion is needed when computers are used to
control a green house.
ADC is needed because sensors Use real world data or Analogue data but computers use
digital data or 1 and 0 so you need to convert the data so it can be understood by the
computer.
4) Many homes now have microprocessor controlled burglar alarm systems.
A) Name two Sensors in such a system and Explain what it is used for.
Sensor 1 - movement sensor
use- senses sudden movement
sensor 2- heat sensor
use- senses heat given off by the body
5) A greenhouse is controlled by a microprocessor. Write three physical variables that
would be Monitored
humidity
temperature
light
