Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

Introduction to manufacturing and metal casting : Introduction to manufacturing and types of
manufacturing processes, metal casting, sand casting, cores and core prints, types of pattern and
allowances, role of gating system, other casting processes, Investment casting, Permanent mold
casting processes, Die casting, Other expandable mold casting processes, Shell molding, Vacuum
molding, Centrifugal casting, Casting qualities, casting defects
Unit II
Joining and assembly processes : Significance of mechanical assembly, Permanent and temporary
fastening techniques, Threaded fasteners, Rivets, Overview of welding technology, Broad classification
of welding processes, Types of joint and types of weld, Arc welding, Consumable electrode arc
welding, Non consumable electrode arc welding, Overview of resistance welding, Oxyfuel gas welding,
Solid state welding processes, Brazing and soldering, Welding defects
Unit III
Metal forming processes : Overview of metal forming, plastic deformation of metals, hot and cold
working of metals, Role of temperature in metal forming, Overview of rolling, types of rolling mills,
Rolling defects, Forging and types of forging, Forging defects, Extrusion and its type, Wire and tube
drawing, Sheet metal operations, Bending operations, significance of spring back effect, Deep drawing
operation
Unit IV
Material removal process : Cutting tools, Classification of cutting tools, Mechanism of metal
cutting, Orthogonal cutting model, Types of chip formation, machining time analysis for turning, Tool
wear and tool life, Importance of cutting fluids, Introduction to grinding, Cylindrical,surface and
centerless grinding
Unit V
CNC machine tools : Introduction and classification of CNC machines, Construction features of CNC
turning and CNC machining centers, Open loop and closed loop CNC systems, CNC controller,
Structural members of CNC machine, Slideways, Linear motion bearing, Ball screw, Work holding and
tool holding devices, Automatic tool changer, Fundamental of part programming, G and M codes
Unit VI
Advanced manufacturing processes : Injection molding, blow molding, compression molding,
overview of powder metallurgy, electric discharge machining, electrochemical machining, ultrasonic
machining
