Project2 FractionsWithPatternBlocks

The Fall 2024 MAT140 Project 2 focuses on using pattern blocks to explore fractions through a group assignment that emphasizes collaboration and individual understanding. The project consists of four parts: demonstrating equivalent fractions, representing algebraic expressions with pattern blocks, creating images with pattern blocks, and reflecting on the learning experience. Each group member must submit their own document, ensuring that while answers are consistent, personal explanations of the solutions vary.

Fall 2024 MAT140

Project 2: Fractions with Pattern Blocks

Everyone in your group must turn in their own INDIVIDUAL project document to Brightspace. HOWEVER,
this is a group assignment. A major part of the assignment being given as a group project is for members to
experience what is called a community of practice, that is, a learning community which serves to support the
learning and coming to understand of individual group members. Everyone in your group should agree on the
final answers.

This project has 4 parts. For each of the first 3 parts, you must do the following:

▪ Answer the question. (Everyone in your group should have the same answer.)
▪ In YOUR own words, explain how you got to the solution and why your solution makes mathematical
sense to YOU. (This part should be different across your group.)

Use the following pattern blocks in answering the questions in Parts 1, 2 and 3.

1 1 1
2 3 6
Part 1 – Warm Up. Use 3 different ways to show 6/6 or 1 or one whole (other than the four ways given on the
previous page).

(Remember, in each case, to explain how you got to the solution and why the solution makes sense to YOU.)

Part 2. Represent the following expressions with pattern blocks, AND also verify the answer algebraically.
(Remember, in each case, to explain how you got to the solution and why the solution makes sense to YOU.)

Part 3. Create a collection of images (car, house, dog, etc.) with pattern block paper. [Everyone in your group
should make at least one image.] All images from the group must appear in everyone’s final project document.
How can each image be represented numerically? (Remember in each case to explain how you got to the
solution and why the solution makes sense to YOU). Show your work and final answer for each image.
Ensure you only use combinations of the 4 pattern blocks given at the beginning of this project.

Part 4. Reflect on the experience of working on and completing this project – your personal journey. Some
things you can mention include:
▪ any ‘new’ learning or understanding and how that came about,
▪ the experience of working in a group for the project,
▪ what was most challenging and what you did to overcome the challenge,
▪ what was most rewarding and why, and
▪ any other reflection you care to include.
