Skill Focus: Identifying Character Traits through explicit and implicit information

Definition: Characterization is the way an author develops a character, or reveals who characters are and what they are
like.

Part A
Directions:
Read each sentence carefully.
Highlight the specific evidence from the text that leads you to each character trait.
Underline the character trait it describes or suggests.
Underline the method of characterization used by the author to reveal that trait.

Direct Characterization Indirect Characterization

The writer makes direct statements about a character. The writer gives clues and depends on the reader to draw
Example: Mohit was an eating machine. He never said no conclusions (infer) about the character’s traits, through
to any food items. what the character says, does, thinks, feels, and what
other people say or think about the character.

Example: Mohit eyed the boy’s pizza hungrily. He’d already


gobbled up 15 donuts and two milkshakes, but it was
never enough.
