Tails OS is an open-source and free operating system that allows users to view its source code
(Rutland, 2021). It is designed to safeguard user privacy and will enable them to use their
devices online anonymously. It is also known as “The Amnesic Incognito Live System,” its
primary goal is to leave no digital trace on the user’s computer, and it is based on the Debian
Linus System (Editorial, 2024). Tails OS can run on desktops, laptops and some MacBooks
which allows booting from USB. Tails OS became popular in 2013 because this OS was used
by Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor. He protected
his identity and spoke with journalists using Tails OS. This emphasizes how crucial Tails OS
that prioritizes privacy in the modern environment (Patidar, 2023).

Tails OS was introduced on 23 June 2009. Amnesia was the original name of the
project. After Amnesia and Incognito were combined, the operating system was created. At
the start of this project, it was developed with funding from the Tor Project. The Tails Project
had proposed a merger with the Tor Project in 2023. On September 26, 2024, the merger was
finalized.

The Tor Project was founded in 2006, and it is a nonprofit organization. The Tor
Project’s goal is to contribute to international discussions about anonymity, privacy, and
avoiding censorship. The Tor Project has several projects. One of its most well-known
projects is Tor Browser, which has the same function as Tails OS which allows users to
conceal their IP address by directing their internet traffic across a global network of
computers (Ozzy, 2024). So, Tails OS can get many benefits after merging with the Tor
Project as it can help Tails OS to develop and maintain its system. It is because the Tor
Project has greater financial support and infrastructure which can support Tails OS to enhance
their system.
