PH - 2.2: Prepare oral rehydration solution from ORS packet and explain its use.
AIM:
To prepare oral rehydration solution from ORS packet.
APPARATUS/MATERIALS REQUIRED:
ORS sachet, 1L beaker/vessel with lid, stirror, scissors, 1L drinking water.
PROCEDURE:
1. ORS sachet is taken and checked for expiry date, manufacturing
date etc. on the packet.
2. Beaker/vessel is inspected for any impurities and add 1L of water
which is boiled and cooled to room temperature.
3. The ORS sachet is cut with clean scissors. Along the makings of
the packet.
4. The contents of the ORS sachet are emptied into the 1L of water in
the beaker/vessel.
5. Mix the contents thoroughly with the stirrer.
6. The beaker/vessel with ORS solution is covered with lid for proper
storage. It is utilized as required.

1. How much ORS is given for a child?
Ans:
1. The child is encouraged to drink the ORS solution as much as he/she
can.
2. A child less than 2years can be given ¼ th to half cup (250ml) after
each watery stool followed by 1-2 teaspoons for every 3 minutes.
3. A child greater than 2years can be given half to one cup after each
watery stool.
4. If the child vomits one should wait for 10minuts and given 1 teaspoon
of ORS for every 3 minutes.
2. Importance of sodium, chloride and Glucose in ORS?
Ans:
Sodium: Sodium is mainly involved in various processes in the body like
a. Action potential generation
b. Maintenance of muscle tone.
c. Maintenance of hydration.
Chloride: Chloride helps to maintain the fluid balance
Glucose: Glucose is the source of energy. It helps in absorption of
sodium.

1. Name few conditions where ORS is indicated?
Ans: In conditions like
1. Diarrhea
2. Dehydration due to sun
3. Vomiting
4. Burns patients
5. Post-surgery to maintain hydration
6. High grade fever.
2. Alternatives to ORS?
Ans: Homemade ORS in 1L of water 8 teaspoons of sugar and 1 teaspoon of
salt. Rice water, dal water can also be used.

1. What is the composition of reduced osmolalirity of ORS
according to WHO?
Ans: Reduced osmolarity ORS-245 mosm/L.

2. Why is ORS discarded after 24 hours?
Ans: The prepared ORS solution should be covered and
used within 24hours, due to the risk of bacterial
contamination.
