Handout 3 Measures of Central Tendancy and Dispersion

The document discusses measures of central tendency and dispersion, specifically focusing on the mean, mode, and median as methods to summarize data. It explains how to calculate the mean by dividing the sum of all values in a dataset by the number of values. An example is provided to illustrate the calculation of the mean using test scores.

MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDANCY AND DISPERSION

These are measures of location and are used to summarise data by coming up with one value to
represent the one value to represent the numbers in a data set.The summary value has to be
calculated or estimated using the original data values to give a typical value. There are three such
measures and they include mean, mode and median.

Mean

Also called the average and is calculated by adding all the values in a data set or set of datato give a
sum or total which is then divided by the number by the number of values in the data set.

Mean=
∑ of all the values∈the data set
