Submit Answers to Q1, Q3, Q4, Q5
Question 1[ 20 Marks]
The state at the beginning of compression of an air standard Diesel cycle is fixed by P1 =
100kPa and T1 = 310K. The compression ratio is 15. For a cutoff ratio of 1.5 find,
A. the maximum temperature, in K. [12 Marks]
B. the pressure at the end of the expansion, in kPa. [3 Marks]
C. the net work per unit mass of air, in kJ/kg. [6 Marks]
D. the thermal efficiency. [4 Marks]
Question 2 [15 Marks]
Air enters the compressor of an ideal air-standard Brayton cycle at 100 kPa, 300 K, with a
volumetric flow rate of 5 m3/s. The compressor pressure ratio is 10. For a turbine inlet
temperature of 1000K, find,
A. the thermal efficiency of the cycle. [4 Marks]
B. the back work ratio. [4 Marks]
C. the net power developed, in kW. [7 Marks]
Question 3 [30 Marks]
The compressor and turbine of a simple gas turbine each have isentropic efficiencies of 90%.
The compressor pressure ratio is 12. The minimum and maximum temperatures are 290K and
1400K, respectively. Based on an air-standard analysis, compare the values of
A. the net amount of work per unit mass of air flowing, in kJ/kg, [10 Marks]
B. the heat rejected per unit mass of air flowing, in kJ/kg, and [6 Marks]
C. the thermal efficiency, [6 Marks]
to the same quantities evaluated for an ideal cycle.
D. Represent the two cases on a TS Diagram. [4 Marks]
E. Draw a schematic arrangement of the cycle including temperatures and pressures. [4
Marks]
Question 4 [30 Marks]
Consider a steam power plant that operates on the ideal regenerative Rankine cycle with a
closed feedwater heater as shown in the figure. The plant maintains the turbine inlet at 3000kPa
and 350⁰C; and operates the condenser at 20 kPa. Steam is extracted at 1000 kPa to serve the
closed feedwater heater, which discharges into the condenser after being throttled to condenser
pressure. Calculate
A. the work produced by the turbine, [7 Marks]
B. the work consumed by the pump, and [7 Marks]
C. the heat supply in the boiler for this cycle [8 Marks]
D. Net work per unit of boiler flow rate. [2 Marks]
E. Thermal efficiency [2 Marks]
F. Represent this on a TS Diagram [4 Marks]
Question 5 [20 Marks]
In a thermal power plant, steam is the working fluid in an ideal Rankine cycle. Saturated vapor
enters the Turbine at 8000kPa, and saturated liquid exits the Condenser at a pressure of 8kPa.
The net power output of the cycle is 100MW. Determine for the cycle.
A. The thermal efficiency. [10 Marks]
B. The Back work ratio [2 Marks]
C. The mass flow rate of the steam, in kg/h. [5 Marks]
D. The rate of heat transfer, into the working fluid as it passes through the boiler, in MW.
