Advanced Separation Assignment 2

The document outlines an assignment involving a ternary separation system with a feed of 112 kg/hr containing 25 wt% solute and 75 wt% carrier. The task includes calculating the value of M and its composition, illustrating the number of equilibrium stages on a ternary diagram, and determining the overall recovery and concentration of the extract stream. The objective is to achieve a raffinate composition of 0.025 wt% solute with a solvent flow of 28 kg/hr.

Advanced Separation Assignment 2

1. Consider a system for which you have been given the ternary diagram. A = solute, S =
solvent (100% pure), C = carrier. The feed, F enters at 112 kg/hr with composition of 25
wt% solute and 75 wt% carrier. The objective is to have a counter-current system that the
raffinate leaving the Nth stage, RN has xRN = 0.025 for a given solvent flow of 28 kg/hr.
I. Calculate the value of M and its composition
II. Show the on the ternary diagram for the number of equilibrium stages
III. Calculate the overall recovery and concentration of the extract stream.
