Power (Exponentiation)
1. Definition:
Let a ∈ ■, n ∈ ■*, the product of n factors of a is called the power of a with exponent n, denoted:
a^n = a · a · ... · a (n factors)
In this expression:
- a: base
- n: exponent
- a^n: power
Example:
2^3 = 2 · 2 · 2 = 8
2. Properties:
Let a, b ∈ ■, m, n ∈ ■, the following properties hold:
- a^m · a^n = a^{m + n}
- a^m / a^n = a^{m - n} (a ≠ 0, m ≥ n)
- (a^m)^n = a^{m · n}
- (ab)^n = a^n · b^n
- (a / b)^n = a^n / b^n (b ≠ 0)
