Bella The Robot Waitress

It was raining and I was at a restaurant waiting (0) of my orders to come. I had ordered my
meal using my phone even though I was sitting right there in (9) a restaurant itself. Things have
changed a lot. Nowadays, it (10) was common to see restaurants with fewer waiters. Phones and
robots (11) has taken over most of their jobs. About ten minutes later, I heard a soft purr. I turned
around (12) but saw a medium-sized robot coming towards my table. My food was (13) in one of
its four trays. The robot (14) pausing for a second as a child suddenly ran in front of it. Bella the
robot (15) serve another table before finally making its way to mine. It stopped as soon as it
reached my table. After telling me to (16) takes my food and saying ‘thank you’, Bella slowly
moved to its station. Although it was an interesting experience, I missed the small talks I used to
have with the friendly human waiters.

‘RESEPI IBU’ RESTAURANT

Fatimah runs a restaurant called ‘Resepi Ibu’. It has been operating since 2001. Her parents first
started the restaurant at Jalan Cenang, Melaka. As business improved over the years, they needed
more space so now they moved to Jalan Rahmat in 2008. The restaurant is open from 11.00 a.m. to
8.00 p.m. on weekdays. On Saturdays, it opens at 10.00 a.m. It is closed on Sunday.

The restaurant offers a variety of local foods such as chicken rendang and satar that her
grandmother and mother used to make. However, the special food here is her mother’s ‘Asam
Pedas Ikan’.

Fatimah started helping her parents at the restaurant when she was 14. She took orders, served
customers and washed the dishes. It was a tiring job but she enjoyed it very much. At 17, she
learnt how to cook the dishes from her mother. Sometimes, she helped her father at the pay desk.
After running the restaurant for 15 years, Fatimah’s parents decide to retire. So, Fatimah took over
the restaurant from them when she was 30 years old.

Fatimah has made a few changes to the restaurant after taking over the business. Customers can
now order takeaway online. In the next few months, she hopes to employ delivery boys.
Customers can also enjoy lunch sets which cost from RM10 to RM15 only.

My father worked in France for a few years. During those years, my father used
to write letters. Staying far away in Spain, I excitedly waited for his letters. He
never sent me any gifts or souvenirs despite me asking all the time. Upon receiving
letters with foreign stamps, I could easily spot my father’s from his familiar
handwriting on the envelope. I would tear it open excitedly.

To be honest, I can't remember the contents of his letters. Most parents would
tell their children to study hard but my father often reminded me to enjoy life as a
teenager. He remembered my hobby of jogging up the hill behind our house.
However, I did not tell him of my new interest then. I loved riding on a horse at the
farm and couldn’t wait to show him my skill.

After several years, my father got a job closer to home. There was no need for
letters anymore. I thought we would begin to talk more, but in fact, we began to
communicate less. I grew apart from the man who had little to say to me. He spent
most of his time writing in his study room while we could have spent time playing
games in the living room or cooking together in the kitchen.

My dad was a great letter writer. He would often write to his bank, neighbours
or relatives. Usually, I was the one who helped him post the mail. As he aged, I
typed his messages. I think I might have picked up his writing skills that I admired
when I was young. His communication skills, on the other hand, were not to be
admired. Mine was much better.
