Paper 1 Section B Data-based question (5)
(a) Hydrogen peroxide decomposes according to the equation:
2H2O2(aq) → 2H2O(l) + O2(g)
Deduce which species is oxidized and which species is reduced during this reaction. [2]
(b) The decomposition of hydrogen peroxide can be accelerated by adding a heterogeneous catalyst
such as manganese(IV) oxide, MnO2.
A student followed this reaction by measuring the loss in mass as the reaction proceeded. She
added a known amount of the hydrogen peroxide solution to a flask together with a known mass
of powdered manganese(IV) oxide in a small test-tube that she inserted into the flask. She placed
the flask and its contents on an electronic balance and tared the balance so that it read zero.
She took readings every 30 seconds. After two minutes she shook the flask thoroughly so the
catalyst came into contact with the hydrogen peroxide solution and continued taking readings every
thirty seconds until the mass of the flask and its contents had remained unchanged for three minutes.
i. Suggest why she tared the balance at time zero rather than just recording the actual mass of the
flask and its contents. [1]
ii. Sketch a graph of her expected results [1]
iii. When she calculated the total amount of oxygen evolved she found that it was actually greater
than the amount that should have been evolved theoretically. Suggest a simple modification to
the set-up shown that would avoid this happening. [1]

(c) The concentration of hydrogen peroxide solution is often given as a percentage.
For medicinal use it is often sold as 6% w/v.
Show that the concentration of 6.00% w/v is 1.76 mol dm-3 and explain why
this equates to 20 volume H2O2 at STP. [3]
(d) When hydrogen peroxide solution is added to an acidified solution of potassium manganate(VII),
KMnO4(aq), a colour change occurs and a gas is evolved. When hydrogen peroxide solution is added
to an acidified solution of potassium iodide, KI(aq), a colour change also occurs but no gas is evolved.
i. Identify the gas evolved in the reaction with the acidified manganate(VII) ions where the colour
changes from purple to a very pale pink due to the formation of Mn2+(aq) ions and deduce the two
half-equations and the overall equation for the reaction taking place. [3]
ii. Explain why no gas is evolved in the reaction with iodide ions. [1]
iii. State the colour change that occurs during the reaction with iodide ions and deduce the overall
equation for the reaction that occurs. [2]
iv. Predict what will occur when an acidified solution of potassium manganate(VII) is added to a
solution of potassium iodide. [1]
