20MEPC602 – HEAT TRANSFER

Assignment - 1
III Year Mech, VIth Semester Mechanical A- Section

1. Derive the general heat conduction equation for a differential volume element
with internal heat generation in Cartesian coordinate system.

2. A furnace wall is made up of three layer of thicknesses 25 cm, 10 cm and 15 cm

with thermal conductivities of first and third layers are 1.65W/mK, and 9.2 W/mK
respectively. The inside is exposed to gases at 1250°C with a convection coefficient
of 25 W/m2 °C and the inside surface is at 1100°C, the outside surface is exposed
to air at 25°C with convection coefficient of 12 W/m 2K. Determine (i) The
unknown thermal conductivity (ii) The overall heat transfer coefficient (iii) All the
surface temperature.

3. Determine the heat loss from an insulated steel pipe carrying a hot liquid to the
surroundings per meter length of the pipe, given the following particulars:
I.D of the pipe = 10 cm; Wall thickness = 1 cm; Thickness of insulation = 3 cm;
Temperature of hot liquid = 85oC; Temperature of surroundings = 25oC; k1 for steel
= 58 W/mK; k2 for insulating material = 0.2 W/mK; Inside heat transfer coefficient
= 720 W/m2 K; Outside heat transfer coefficient = 9 W/m 2 K.

4. A plane wall 10 cm thick generates heat at the rate of 4 x 10 4 W/m3 when an

electric current is passed through it. The convective heat transfer coefficient
between each face of the wall and the ambient air is 50 W/m 2K. Determine (i)the
surface temperature, (ii) the maximum temperature in the wall. Assume ambient
temperature to be 20oC and the thermal conductivity of the wall material to be 15
W/mK.

5. A steam pipe 10 cm I.D and 11 cm O.D is covered with an insulating substance (k

= 1 W/mK). The steam temperature and the ambient temperatures are 200 oC and
20oC respectively. If the convective heat transfer coefficient between the
insulating surface and the air is 8 W/m2K, find the critical radius of insulation. For
this value of ro(outer Radii), calculate the heat loss per meter length of pipe and
outer surface temperature. Neglect the resistance of pipe material.
