Homework Set 1

The document outlines Homework Set 1 for ME 2202, focusing on the dynamics of rigid bodies. It includes four problems involving an elevator's motion under gravity, a magnetic particle's movement in a magnetic field, the position and velocity of a box following a spiral path, and the angular motion of a forked rod with a peg. Each problem requires calculations related to velocity, acceleration, and time under specified conditions.

ME 2202 –Dynamics of Rigid Bodies

Homework Set 1
1. An elevator is moving upward at 15 m/s. The cable fails when
the elevator reaches point A, 40 m from the ground.

(1) Find the maximum height SB reached by the elevator.

(2) Find its speed just before it hits the ground.

The elevator is subject to a constant downward acceleration of 9.81

m/s2 (due to gravity). Do not consider the effect of air resistance.

2. A metallic (magnetic) particle is travelling through a magnetic

A
field (treated as a fluid), established between plates A and B. At
t0 = 0 s, the particle is released from rest at midpoint C (x = 100 mm), 100 mm
and is subjected to downward acceleration of a = (4x) m/s2.
x
Calculate (1) the velocity of the particle when it reaches plate B, C
and (2) the time it takes it to get there.
200 mm

3. Box B follows the spiral according to the position vector, r = {0.5

sin (2t)i + 0.5 cos (2t)j – 0.2tk} m, where t is in seconds and sin and
cos arguments are in radians. Find the location of the box when t =
0.75s. Find (1) the magnitude of its velocity and (2) acceleration at
that instance.

4. A forked rod is rotating, forcing cylindrical peg A to follow a

slotted path. A portion of the path has the shape of a cardioid, as
shown ( is in radians)

𝑟 = 0.5(1 − 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃) ft

When  = 180deg, the peg’s velocity v = 4ft/s, and its acceleration

a = 30 ft/s2. Determine (1) the angular velocity 𝜃̇ and (2) the
angular acceleration 𝜃̈ of the fork at that instant.
