1. Give a function C in equation form that can
represent the cost of buying x meals, if one meal 2. Jeepney ride costs P15.00 for the first 4
cost P40. kilometers, and each additional kilometer adds
Solution: Since each meal costs P40, then the P2.00 to the fare. Use a piecewise function to
cost function is represent the jeepney fare in terms of the
distance d in kilometers.
Ans. C(x) = 40x Given:
2. Give a function R that represents the remaining Fixed rate: P15 for first 4 kilometers
money after spending ₱40 per day on Additional kilometer beyond 4km: P2 per km
transportation for d days, if you have a ₱500 Let: d= distance traveled in km
weekly allowance. f(d)= total fare
Ans. R(d) = 500-40d 15, if 0 < d ≤ 4
f(d)=
3. One hundred meters of fencing is available to 15+ 2(d-4), if d > 4
enclose a rectangular area next to a river (see
figure). Give a function A that can represent the 3. The cost of hiring a catering service to serve
area that can be enclosed, in terms of x. food for a party is ₱250.00 per head for 50
persons or less, ₱200.00 per head for 51 to 100
persons, and ₱150.00 per head for more than
100. Represent the total cost as a piecewise
function of the number of attendees to the party.
Given:
P250 per head for 50 persons or less
P200 per head for 51 to 100 persons
P150 per head for more than 100 persons
Let: n= number of attendees
Solution: The area of the rectangular enclosure C(n)= total cost
is A = xy (length x width). We will write this
as a function of x. Since only 100 m of fencing 250n, if 0 < n ≤ 50
is available (for the perimeter of the enclosure), C(n)= 200n, if 51 ≤ n ≤ 100
then x+2y =100 (Perimeter = 2l+2w) or y = (100 150n, if n > 100
−x)/2 = 50 − 0.5x. Thus,
Ans. A(x) = x(50 − 0.5x)
= 50x − 0.5x2
Piecewise Functions
These are functions built from pieces of different
functions over different intervals of inputs.
Some situations can only be described by more than one
formula, depending on the value of the independent
variable. We notate this idea like this:
Example/s:
1. A user is charged ₱250.00 monthly for a
particular mobile plan, which includes 200 free
text messages. Messages in excess of 200 are
charged ₱1.00 each. Represent the monthly cost
for text messaging using the function t(m),
where m is the number of messages sent in a
month.
Given:
Fixed monthly fee: ₱250 with 200 free text
messages.
Excess messages: ₱1.00 per message
Let: m= number of messages sent in a month
t(m) = total cost in pesos for a certain
month
