SAT Math Lesson Note

Topic: Geometry and Trigonometry

Objective:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Apply geometric formulas involving angles, triangles, circles, and polygons.
- Use the Pythagorean Theorem and special right triangle rules.
- Solve problems involving the sine, cosine, and tangent of angles.
- Interpret and solve real-world and SAT-style problems involving geometric and
trigonometric concepts.

Key Concepts & Formulas

1. Angles and Lines

- Straight line: 180°
- Circle: 360°
- Complementary angles: Add up to 90°
- Supplementary angles: Add up to 180°
- Vertical angles: Opposite and equal
- Parallel lines and transversals:
- Alternate interior angles are equal
- Corresponding angles are equal

2. Triangles
- Sum of interior angles = 180°
- Exterior angle = Sum of the two remote interior angles
- Types of triangles:
- Equilateral: All sides and angles equal (60° each)
- Isosceles: Two equal sides and two equal angles
- Scalene: All sides and angles are different
- Right triangle: Includes a 90° angle
- Important formulas:
- Pythagorean Theorem: a² + b² = c²
- Area of a triangle: ½ × base × height
- Special right triangles:
- 45°-45°-90°: sides in ratio 1:1:√2
- 30°-60°-90°: sides in ratio 1:√3:2

3. Circles
- Radius (r): Distance from center to edge
- Diameter (d): 2r
- Circumference: C = 2πr
- Area: A = πr²
- Arc length: (θ / 360) × 2πr
- Area of a sector: (θ / 360) × πr²

4. Polygons
- Sum of interior angles: (n - 2) × 180°
- Each interior angle (regular polygon): ((n - 2) × 180°) / n
- Exterior angle (regular polygon): 360° / n

5. Coordinate Geometry
- Distance formula: √((x₂ - x₁)² + (y₂ - y₁)²)
- Midpoint formula: ((x₁ + x₂)/2, (y₁ + y₂)/2)
- Slope: m = (y₂ - y₁)/(x₂ - x₁)
- Equation of a line: y = mx + b

6. Trigonometry
Used mostly with right triangles.

Basic trig ratios (SOHCAHTOA):

- Sine: sin θ = opposite / hypotenuse
- Cosine: cos θ = adjacent / hypotenuse
- Tangent: tan θ = opposite / adjacent

Applications:
- Trigonometry is used in height and distance problems, angle of elevation and depression,
and word problems involving real-world contexts.

SAT Strategy Tips

1. Know your formulas – the SAT provides some geometry formulas, but not all.
2. Draw and label diagrams – especially when dealing with word problems.
3. Memorize special triangle ratios for quick calculations.
4. Eliminate wrong answer choices strategically if stuck.
5. Check for hidden triangles in geometry figures or coordinate problems.

Practice Questions
1. A right triangle has legs of length 6 and 8. What is the length of the hypotenuse?
2. What is the area of a circle with diameter 10?
3. In triangle ABC, angle A is 30°, and the opposite side is 6. Find the hypotenuse using sine.
4. A regular hexagon is drawn. What is the measure of each interior angle?
5. A line segment has endpoints (3, 4) and (7, 8). Find its length.

Homework Assignment
Solve at least 10 SAT-style geometry and trigonometry questions from your practice
workbook or from the College Board SAT prep platform. Focus on identifying which formula
or concept each question is testing.
