Omar instructed CFAP224 3C to conduct a study and write a report on the “Social Media Usage
Affects Academic Achievements Among University Students”. This report is to be submitted on
January 25, 2025.
ABSTRACT

The study examines the impact of social media usage on academic achievements among
Semester 3 undergraduates at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Selangor. Sixty respondents
from the Built Environment College participated in the survey. Using descriptive analysis, the
study measured the frequency of social media usage for academic purposes and its relationship
with academic performance. The findings reveal that most students use social media extensively
for study-related activities, but high usage for non-academic purposes negatively affects their
academic achievements. The study concludes that while social media can be a valuable tool for
learning, excessive or unbalanced use may hinder academic success. It recommends promoting
awareness of effective social media usage strategies among university students to enhance their
academic outcomes.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Social media is a collection of websites and apps that allow people to connect and communicate.
Users can create, share, and discuss various types of content found on the internet. The rapid
growth of technology and the internet, particularly in the realm of social media, has significantly
transformed the daily lives of people, especially students, creating a new way of living and
interacting.

Social media platforms have a significant impact on schooling. In fact, by interacting with
learning groups and other educational systems, students are given several chances to enhance
their education and obtain the most recent knowledge (Greenhow and Robelia, 2009). By
interacting with various people, students may also share information. Student learning results
may benefit from this (Yu et al., 2010).

The 2012 survey by the Educause Center for Applied Research (ECAR) revealed that a
significant majority of students in higher education, approximately 67%, acknowledged the
crucial impact of mobile computing devices, including cell phones, smartphones, and tablets, as
well as social media, on their academic success and professional development.

A researcher from the University of Central Florida indicated that electronic devices and social
media enable students to engage in collaborative learning and share resource materials with their
peers. Social media and mobile devices let students create, edit, and share course content in text,
video, or audio. These technologies create new learning cultures focused on collective
exploration and interaction (Selwyn, 2012).
University students utilize social networking platforms extensively. This study looked at the
reasons people use social networking sites and how they affect social interaction, learning, and
sleep length. Materials and techniques: At Prince Sattam bin Abdul Aziz University, 300 female
students aged 17 to 29 participated in cross-sectional research. A survey was used to collect the
data. The chi-squared test, sometimes known as Fisher's exact test, was used to examine the data.
The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has presented conventional in-person education institutions
with hitherto unheard-of difficulties. Countries have taken steps to restrict big meetings and
impose physical distance in an effort to slow the virus's transmission, which has resulted in the
suspension of in-person classes. Many governments have therefore switched to internet forms for
all educational activities. However, the lack of formal online learning management systems
(LMS) and technical infrastructure required for efficient communication between students and
faculty members presents major challenges for public institutions in a number of developing
countries, including Egypt.
1.2 Problem Statement

Social media has both possible advantages and disadvantages for academic participation. These
advantages include group conversations, the sharing of educational materials, and the ability to
connect with classmates and teachers. The COVID-19 pandemic drastically changed the
educational landscape and hastened the uptake of digital tools and online learning. During this
time, social media platforms became essential tools for college students to communicate, work
together, and share knowledge. Social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and
WhatsApp are being used more and more for educational activities like peer conversations,
sharing study materials, and enrolling in virtual classes.

Even though social media helped students study and connect with others when they were alone,
it also increased their dangers in a number of ways. Uncontrolled or excessive social media use
can cause procrastination, diversions, and a reduction in study time, all of which can have a
detrimental effect on academic achievement. Research conducted during the COVID-19
pandemic reveals that students' usage of social media varied greatly. While some used it as an
effective learning aid, others found that their excessive recreational use caused them to lose
attention in class. Given its dual function and the absence of formal, physical learning settings,
social media's overall effect on academic achievement during COVID-19 is called into question.

In order to address these problems, this study looks at how college students use social media and
how it relates to their academic achievement. By doing that, it hopes to offer insights that will
assist students, educators, and policymakers to better understand the benefits and challenges the
medium presents.
1.3 Objectives of the Study

The goal of this study is to investigate students’ academic achievement in relation to the usage of
social media among college students of Faculty Built and Environment in University Technology
Mara, Shah Alam, Selangor. The following are some objectives for investigation that this report
recommends:

(a) To assess the use of social media from mobile devices in purposes of using social media
in academics.

(b) To establish communicative interaction by social media for academicians in higher

education institutions.

(c) To analyze the relationship between social media usage and academic performance
among university students.
1.4 Significance of the Study

In order to comprehend how social media platforms affect students' learning practices, time
management, and academic performance, it is important to investigate the relationship between
social media usage and academic achievement among university students. As social media
advances towards greater good in everyday life, it is important to consider both its possible
advantages like making networking and knowledge exchange easier and disadvantages like
procrastination and diversions. In addition to helping students balance their online and academic
obligations, this research can help educational institutions create policies and programs that
encourage social media use in a proper manner. In the end, the study offers insightful information
that can enhance well-being and academic performance while encouraging a more positive,
healthy relationship with technology.
1.5 Scope of the Study
The survey was completed by fifty students in their third semester at UiTM Shah Alam's College
of Built Environment. These respondents were students in the modern period, and the majority of
them made full use of social media to get information or even study materials. The results could
not be extrapolated to the larger UiTM population because of the limited sample size, which only
permitted researchers to use descriptive statistics. This study's 14-week timeframe, which ran
from September 2024 to January 2025, restricted the study's breadth in terms of the factors it
examined.
1.6 Previous Study

Gikas & Grant (2013) mentioned that Mobile devices and social media provide excellent
educational e-learning opportunities to the students for academic collaboration, accessing in
course contents, and tutors despite the physical boundaries. Gikas & Grant (2013) also said that
the result of the focus group interview of the students in 3 different universities in the United
States confirmed that use of social media created opportunities for the learners for collaborative
learning, creating and engaging the students in various extracurricular activities.

According to Richardson & Lenarcic (2008) mobile devices and social media provide
opportunities to the students for accessing resources, materials, course contents, interaction with
mentor and colleagues. Selwyn (2012) social media and mobile devices allow the students to
create, edit and share the course contents in textual, video or audio forms. These technological
innovations give birth to a new kind of learning culture, learning based on the principles of
collective exploration and interaction.

Kaplan & Haenlein (2010) Social media phenomena originated in 2005 after the Web2.0
existence into the reality, defined more clearly as “a group of Internet-based applications that
build on the ideological and technological foundation of web 2.0 and allow creation and
exchange of user-generated contents.

Reuben (2008).Recently Pew Research Center reported that 55% American teenage age bracket
of 15–17years using online social networking sites, i.e. Myspace and Facebook. DeBell &
Chapman (2006) 90% school going students currently utilise the internet consistently, with more
than 75% teenagers using online networking sites for e-learning.

However, Woods & Scott (2016) describes social media has more adverse effects than positive
ones. According to Bekalu et al., (2019) since students tend to spend more time on social media
other than educational purposes this tends to cause distraction from the learning environment,
affecting their academic progress. Zou et al., (2019) said that spending a lot of time on social
networking sites can lead to a sedentary lifestyle and a decrease in daily physical activity levels,
which in turn can render them vulnerable to noncommunicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes,
and hypertension.
2.0 METHODOLOGY

This study will use a quantitative research methodology to investigate the connection between
undergraduate students' academic success and their use of social media. Examining the effects of
social media use on students' academic performance specifically, their grades or GPA is the main
goal. About 60 students from a range of academic programs at a university will receive a survey;
they will be chosen at random to guarantee sample diversity. Students' demographics (age,
gender, major), social media usage habits (frequency and duration of use of Facebook,
Instagram, Twitter, etc.), and academic achievement (self-reported GPA or grades) will all be
covered in the survey.Students will also be questioned about how they believe social media
influences their academic performance, both favorably and unfavorably.

The survey's data will be examined using descriptive statistics to provide an overview of the
sample's overall social media use and academic achievement. After that, correlation analysis will
be done to see if there is a meaningful connection between students' academic performance and
the amount of time they spend on social media. This investigation will assist in determining if
increased use of social media is linked to better or worse academic achievement.

The investigation will be conducted with full adherence to ethical considerations. All participants
will be asked for their informed permission, guaranteeing that they are aware of the study's
objectives, the voluntary nature of their involvement, and their freedom to discontinue
participation at any moment without incurring any fees. All responses will be anonymous, and
the data will not be associated with any personal identifiers in order to preserve confidentiality.
2.1 Respondents of the Study

There were sixty respondents, both males and females, selected randomly to be the sample in this
survey. The respondents were UiTM Shah Alam Semester 3 undergraduate students of the
Quantity Surveying Faculty. They ranged between 21 to 23 years old and above.

2.2 Instruments of the Study

The questionnaire was adapted from two online questionnaires to address the objectives of the
study (Please refer to Appendix 1). There were three sections in the questionnaire regarding the
requirements for achieving the objectives of this study.

Section 1 was about the background of the respondents. In Section 2, eleven related questions
were set to find out the frequency of using social media during study among Semester 3
undergraduate students covering hours spent and the distraction.

Lastly, in Section 3, there were only five questions asking about the reasons why they use social
media platforms for study purposes and what to do to widening the use. It is designed to find out
the smart way of students managing the use of social media for study. The type of questions in
Sections 1 and 2 are multiple choice while section 3 uses short paragraphs for subjective
answers.

2.3 Data Collection Procedure

The questionnaires were distributed among the respondents of the College of Built Environment
Faculty consisting of 3rd semester classes which are Class A,B and C. The questionnaires were
distributed to these classes to collect the data to complete this research. The questionnaire was
given during the best timing for the respondents while answering the questionnaire such as lunch
hours and also in the evening as these hours are usually their leisure time. Time required to
answer the questionnaire was about 5 to 10 minutes.
2.4 Data Analysis Method

Descriptive analysis was used in this study to analyse the data. The data that has been analysed
was converted into percentages and later on presented in a chart from frequency count using
Google Form applications. The percentage from this analysis is concluded and summarised to
determine the most frequent answer.
3.0 FINDINGS

3.1 Background of the Respondents

A questionnaire consisting of fifteen questions was distributed to sixty respondents of Semester 3

undergraduate students from the Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Hons.) from Built Environment
College. The demographic details were on gender, age and class of the respondents. Out of sixty
respondents, 52 percent were females and 48 percent were males. The respondents’ age ranged
from 18 to 24 years old. Most respondents (85%) were 21-23 years old. With respect to CGPA
achievement, 17 students obtained a CGPA between 2.01 to 3.0. Meanwhile, 24 respondents
from class CFAP224 3C, 21 respondents from CFAP224 3B and the remainder belong to the
CFAP224 3B with 15 respondents
3.2 Purpose using social media in academics

Figure 3.1

Figure 3.1 shows the percentage of primary purposes of using social media in academics. The
percentage shows a lot of respondents use social media as a medium to access the study material
with 41.9% meanwhile some of them use it for different purposes. As shown above, there are
some respondents who use social media to connect with classmates and teachers, watching
educational content and participating in group discussions with percentages of 30.6%, 19.4% and
8.1% respectively.
3.3 Frequency of participating in academic group discussions on social media

Figure 3.2

Figure 3.2 above shows a pie chart about frequency of participating in academic group
discussions on social media. The chart shows a very large number of respondents participating in
the group discussions 2-3 times per week with 40.3%. The rest of the numbers are 27.4%, 17.7%
and 14.5% with each referring to participating in it daily, rarely or never and once per week
respectively.
3.4 Academic performance by implementing social media into study routine

Figure 3.3

In figure 3.3, the chart shows academic performance of the respondents when using social media
in their study routine. 41.9% of respondents' performance improved slightly. Meanwhile, 24.2%
stated that there’s no change in their performance. Moreover, 8.7% and 11.3% of the respondents
improved significantly and declined slightly respectively. The small percentages of the
respondents performance’s declined significantly with 2.3%. The chart highlights a trend where
social media integration has mixed effects, with the largest group benefiting slightly, but a
smaller portion experiencing either no change or a decline.
4.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

4.1 Conclusions

Based on the findings and discussions from 3.2, 3.3 and 3.4, it can be concluded that:

4.1.1 According to these results, social media is mainly used as an academic tool to improve
accessibility to learning, while also facilitating collaboration and providing additional learning
opportunities through educational resources. On the other hand, the comparatively low
proportion for group discussions can point to a possible area that could use more collaborative
learning activities.

4.1.2 According to this distribution, group discussions are a rather common activity used, yet
plenty of students participate in them occasionally or never, maybe because of different tastes or
academic requirements.

4.1.3 In conclusion, most people find that adopting social media into their educational routines
either has no effect or slightly improves their performance, however there is a small chance that
it will. Rather than being harmful, the overall effect seems to be mostly neutral or beneficial. The
findings of the study found that most students' academic performance is slightly enhanced by
using social media for academic purposes, such as accessing study materials and interacting with
classmates and teachers, excessive non-academic use presents serious problems. A lesser
percentage of students experience poor academic results because of these issues, which include
procrastination, distractions, and decreased study efficiency.
4.2 Recommendations

Based on the conclusions, it is recommended that:

4.2.1 teachers create more opportunities for group discussions on social media by making them
fun, engaging, and an essential part of the learning process,

4.2.2 schools and universities provide workshops and practical tools to help students use social
media responsibly, reducing distractions and staying focused on their studies, and

4.2.3 clear and simple guidelines be shared with both students and teachers on how to use social
media effectively for learning, with regular check-ins to make improvements.
