Children and Social Media: The Appropriate Age.
The argument about the appropriate age for children to own cellphones and have access to social media has stretched
on for years, bringing the negative and positive effects of social media on children to light. This paper argues that no matter the
age, parents should only allow children access to social media if they can dedicate time to monitoring the activities of said child
on the Internet.
Social media is undeniably beneficial to children, especially in their growth and learning. According to Chau, social
media is a great platform for children to socialize, increase their creativity, interact and learn(128). Social Media provides a
platform for children to connect with their peers, and serves as an easy medium of communication between children and their
social environments. Another benefit of social media is that it breeds cultural awareness, as it connects people from different
backgrounds, all over the world. Children have the opportunity to make friends around the globe and learn about other cultures
and their practices.
The positive effects of social media, although highly beneficial, do not rule out the many risks associated with children's
use of social media. A source of major concern on this topic has been how easily pornographic content can be assessed on the
internet. Children may be exposed to pornographic texts and videos, as sources of these contents cannot all be closed down.
In addition to pornographic exposure, contents encouraging substance abuse and other harmful vices can be assessed
by children, corrupting their minds and contributing greatly to moral decadence in the society. Undiyaundeye in her study of the
advantages and disadvantages of social media for children, highlighted some potential risks that social media poses for children.
Defective social relationships, sexting, cyber-bullying and online harassments are all threats to children and their mental health
(n.p.)
Social Media for children has its advantages and disadvantages, but the risks cannot be overlooked. Parents who
choose to give their children access to social media, must be vigilant and monitor the activities of the children. Firm boundaries
should be put in place, and parents should create safe spaces for children to communicate with them when in difficulty.
