Reading for pleasure is very important for our pupils as it creates a love for reading and exposes them to lots of
different words! Here are some reading activities you can do during the summer holidays:
Here is a link for a suggested reading list for your children: https://www.lovereading4schools.co.uk/lists/52/Year-1-

The Summer Reading Challenge website is free to access and a place for children to rate and review the books they
are reading as they progress towards their reading goal.

Local libraries: libraries should’ve started to reopen from the 4th July so make a visit! Southwark have also created
many home activities that pupils can do whilst at home.

When reading with your child it is really important to ask them questions about what they are reading. Here are
some suggested questions you could ask:
“Who is the author of this book?”
“What is the title?”
“What do you think the book will be about from looking at the cover?”
“What is this story about?"
"What does the main character want?"
"Will she/he get it?" "If so, how?"
Here are some reading texts you can work on with your child.

Use your phonics to help you read the text.
If your child is struggling to write the answers, ask your child to orally tell it to you.
