The Magic of ‘TH’ Sounds in English 📖
The ‘TH’ sound in English can be tricky because it
has two pronunciations: Unvoiced (soft) and
Voiced (hard). Understanding these simple rules
will help you identify and teach them easily!

1️⃣ ‘TH’ Between Two Vowels = Voiced

When ‘TH’ appears between two vowels, it makes
a voiced sound (like a soft ‘d’). This happens
because vowels are naturally voiced, influencing
the ‘TH’ sound in between. You can feel
vibrations in your throat when pronouncing it.

✅ Examples: brother, father, mother, rather, @akshitajasolia03

gather, feather, weather, leather, another,

together

2️⃣ ‘TH’ at the End of Words = Unvoiced

When ‘TH’ is at the end of a word or syllable, it
is pronounced as an unvoiced soft sound (like a
whispered ‘th’ with no vocal cord vibration). The
tongue touches the teeth lightly, creating a soft
sound.

@akshitajasolia03
✅ Examples: bath, myth, path, health, month,
depth, earth, truth, width, filth

3️⃣ Silent ‘E’ Changes ‘TH’ from Soft to Hard

If a word ends in ‘TH’ and you add a silent ‘E,’
the pronunciation changes from soft to hard
(unvoiced → voiced). The silent ‘E’ elongates the
vowel before it and alters the ‘TH’ pronunciation.

✅ Examples: breath → breathe, bath → bathe,

cloth → clothe, sheath → sheathe, wreath →
wreathe, loath → loathe, teeth → teethe, worth
→ worthe, booth → boothe, mouth → mouthe

4️⃣ ‘TH’ at the Start of Sight Words = Voiced

@akshitajasolia03

When ‘TH’ appears at the beginning of functional

(grammar-related) words, it is always voiced.
These are often words we use frequently in
speech, so the voiced sound makes them
smoother to pronounce.

✅ Examples: this, that, these, those, there, their,

them, then, though, thus

5️⃣ ‘TH’ at the Start of Other Words = Unvoiced
If ‘TH’ appears at the beginning of a word that is
NOT a sight word, it is unvoiced. These words
typically describe things or actions and require a
sharper articulation of ‘TH.’

✅ Examples: thin, think, thank, thumb, thunder,

thirsty, theory, thorn, thief, therapy
