1. Introduction
A company is establishing a new branch office to support its growing operations.
As part of the IT infrastructure setup, a secure, scalable, and efficient network
was required to serve internal departments, provide wireless access, and ensure
inter-department communication. This document outlines the network design and
implementation based on provided requirements.
2. Objectives
The project aimed to:
Deploy a network infrastructure using standard Cisco devices.
Segment internal departments using VLANs for logical separation.
Enable inter-VLAN communication through routing.
Provide wireless connectivity for mobile and remote access.
Configure devices to obtain IP addresses automatically via DHCP.
Ensure reliable communication among all departments.
3. Network Overview
Network Design and Implementation Report 1
The branch network consists of the following:
Core Devices:
1 Cisco Router (for inter-VLAN routing and gateway services)
1 Cisco Layer 2 Switch (to connect internal wired devices)
Departments:
1. Admin/IT
2. Finance/HR
3. Customer Service/Reception
VLAN Assignment:
Each department is assigned a dedicated VLAN to ensure security and
performance isolation.
Wireless Infrastructure:
Each department has a dedicated wireless access point, allowing laptops,
tablets, and smartphones to connect. Access Points are connected to the
switch and bridge traffic into the corresponding VLAN.
IP Address Management:
All host devices (PCs, printers, laptops, mobile devices) obtain IPv4 addresses
dynamically through a central DHCP service.
4. Logical Topology Description
The network topology consists of:
A single router connected to the switch via a trunk port to handle inter-VLAN
routing (router-on-a-stick approach).
Three VLANs configured on the switch, mapped to:
Admin/IT
Finance/HR
Customer Service/Reception
Network Design and Implementation Report 2
Multiple end devices in each department including PCs, printers, and mobile
devices.
Each department's wireless access point connects directly to the switch and is
mapped to the appropriate VLAN.
DHCP service is centrally managed to assign IP addresses per VLAN/subnet.
5. Key Features Implemented
Departmental VLAN Segmentation: Logical separation to improve network
security and manageability.
Inter-VLAN Communication: Configured via sub-interfaces on the router.
Wireless Connectivity: Each department has its own access point connected
to the wired network.
DHCP for IP Assignment: Automatically assigns IP addresses to all wired and
wireless hosts.
Scalability and Simplicity: The network design allows future expansion with
minimal configuration changes.
6. Testing & Verification
Connectivity Tests:
Devices across VLANs successfully pinged each other (wired and
wireless).
Wireless devices could communicate with their respective VLAN peers
and access devices in other VLANs.
DHCP Functionality:
All end devices received valid IP addresses from the configured DHCP
server.
Inter-VLAN Routing:
Verified through ping tests and routing tables — traffic between VLANs
successfully passed through the router.

7. Conclusion
The branch network for the company has been successfully designed and
implemented in accordance with the requirements. It supports VLAN-based
segmentation, wireless access, DHCP-based IP addressing, and inter-department
communication. The design ensures a secure, scalable, and efficient network
foundation for the new branch office.
