Today, I took time to reflect on how various teaching philosophies and
their proponents influence the way I teach and interact with my students.
I’ve come to realize that my approach in the classroom is shaped by a
blend of philosophical perspectives that support meaningful learning. One
philosophy I strongly apply is constructivism, championed by Jean Piaget
and Lev Vygotsky. I believe that students learn best when they are
actively involved in constructing their own understanding. In my classes, I
incorporate group work, real-life problem-solving tasks, and guided
discovery activities. For example, instead of simply explaining a concept, I
often pose questions and provide materials so students can explore and
learn through interaction and reflection. I also find value in the student-
centered philosophy promoted by John Dewey, who emphasized
experiential learning. I encourage students to relate lessons to their own
lives and experiences. During science activities or project-based tasks, I
allow them to make choices, take ownership of their learning, and reflect
on the outcomes. This helps them develop critical thinking and
independence. In addition, Howard Gardner’s theory of Multiple
Intelligences reminds me that each learner is unique. I try to design varied
activities—visual aids, music, movement, writing, and discussions—to
reach students with different learning preferences. This has been
especially helpful in maintaining engagement and inclusivity in the
classroom. From the essentialist philosophy of William Bagley, I also draw
inspiration when it comes to maintaining structure and ensuring that basic
skills and core knowledge are taught. I recognize the importance of a solid
foundation in reading, writing, and math, and I use direct instruction and
drills where appropriate, especially with struggling learners who need

clarity and repetition. These philosophies are not used in isolation but are
blended depending on the needs of my students and the learning
objectives. I have come to appreciate that effective teaching requires
flexibility, reflection, and intentional practice guided by a clear
understanding of educational theories. In conclusion, applying these
teaching philosophies has helped me become a more thoughtful and
responsive educator. Each day in the classroom is an opportunity to put
theory into action, always with the goal of helping learners grow not just
academically, but holistically
